Brookhaven, GA is experiencing major traffic delays due to extensive road construction on North Druid Hills Road. The Georgia Department of Transportation has closed a lane for drainage installation, impacting drivers from February 24 to March 2. Additional lane closures will occur for bridge construction on I-85, affecting southbound and northbound traffic later this weekend. This construction is part of a larger $80 million improvement project aimed at reducing congestion in the area.
If you’re driving around Brookhaven, GA this week, it’s good to be prepared for some serious traffic delays, especially on North Druid Hills Road. The local roadways are bustling with activity as crews from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) are busy turning up the pavement. Their main focus right now is a construction project directly in front of the new Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Hospital.
To get down to the nitty-gritty, GDOT has closed one left lane from the I-85 northbound on-ramp to Tullie Road. This lane closure is all about installing new construction drains in the area. The work is scheduled to run nightly throughout the week, impacting traffic from Monday, February 24, to Friday, February 28, between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.. Talk about late-night delays!
When it comes to closures and detours, there are a few key routes to keep an eye on:
And don’t think it stops there. Additional nighttime work will carry on from February 28 to March 2, also from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.. It looks like some drivers may want to think about an alternate routine for a while.
For drivers who frequently use I-85, there’s more to be aware of. A complete shutdown of all lanes at North Druid Hills Road for bridge construction will take place this Friday night. Expect the southbound lanes to be closed from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Saturday, and the same for the northbound lanes Saturday night into Sunday morning. It’s shaping up to be quite the weekend for road warriors.
This construction is a part of the new “Displaced Left Turn” project designed to reduce intersection delays and ease congestion. It’s also part of a more extensive $80 million improvement initiative in the Brookhaven area with the hope of finishing everything up by the end of Q1 2025. Yes, it’s a lengthy project, but it’s geared towards not just fixes but better long-term solutions.
Local residents have been expressing their concerns about the expected increase in traffic due to the 90-day bridge reconstruction. To avoid the hassle, it might be wise to consider a detour. A recommended route suggests taking Buford Road to Clairmont Road and then to I-85. That’s about a 5-mile detour, but it could save you from some serious frustration.
The upcoming bridge improvements aren’t just for vehicles, either. Wider dimensions and better accommodations for pedestrians are part of the upgrades, made necessary because the existing bridge was built way back in the 1960s and is in dire need of modernization.
While it may be a bit of an inconvenience now, these upgrades could lead to smoother travels for everyone in the future. So, grab your patience, maybe plan to leave the house a little earlier, and let’s help support our community through these necessary changes.
