Brit Turner, Co-Founder of Atlanta’s Blackberry Smoke, Has Died

Sad news for the music world as Brit Turner, the co-founder and drummer of the Atlanta-based country rock band, Blackberry Smoke, passed away at the age of 57. His death was announced via a social media post on Sunday night and sent shock waves throughout the music industry. Turner had been battling glioblastoma, a form of cancer that affects the brain, since his diagnosis in the Fall of 2022.

A True North for the Band

The announcement described Turner’s crucial role in the band’s ethos and direction – referred to as the band’s “True North,” the compass that set and drove the band’s ideology. This will continue to inspire and guide the band, even in his absence.

Blackberry Smoke– A Brief History

Turner was the heart of the formation of Blackberry Smoke, starting the band in 2000 with singer Charlie Starr, guitarist Paul Jackson, Brandon Still and his brother, Richard Turner. The band made substantial waves in the music world, producing hits like 2015’s “Holding All The Roses” and 2016’s “Like An Arrow“. To date, the band has a total of 8 studio albums to their credit. Their last album, “Be Right Here“, features the heartfelt song “Dig A Hole“, along with other memorable tracks such as “Like It Was Yesterday“, “Azalea” and “Little Bit Crazy“.

The Record of a Lifetime

The last album was a significant testament to the band’s philosophy of living in the moment and expressing authenticity, an evident influence of Turner’s spirit. Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer, Dave Cobb, known for his works with the likes of Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell, “Be Right Here” stands as a musical tribute to Turner’s life and his belief in living authentically.

Carrying the Legacy Forward

The band has expressed their deep loss and the void Turner’s demise leaves behind. His impact will continue to be felt through the sounds and echoes of Blackberry Smoke, the band that was formed from his passion and dedication to music.

Turner’s Roots and Influence

Turner’s early life had a significant impact on his musical career. Born in Michigan and raised in Smyrna, he came from a musically gifted family. His father played in a big band, his grandmother was a pianist, and his uncle was a guitar player. These early influences shaped him into the music artist the fans across the world admired and loved.

Turner Leaves a Void

The music world will remember Brit Turner, not just for his music, but also for the authenticity and inspiration he brought to every performance. His signature drumming style and charismatic stage presence will be sorely missed in the world of music. His legacy will, however, continue to be cherished through his music and the band he loved – Blackberry Smoke.
