In an exciting development for Atlanta’s burgeoning biotech and life sciences scene, Portal Innovations has officially opened its doors to a brand new 33,000-square-foot facility designed specifically for startups in this domain. Located in the Science Square complex, this space aims to fill a significant gap that Atlanta has been facing compared to other major biotech hubs like Boston, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. With limited lab space and investment opportunities historically, Atlanta’s startups often struggled to find the support they needed to thrive.
Portal Innovations isn’t just bringing lab space; they are also injecting capital into the local startup ecosystem. Their first significant investment has been made into Moonlight Therapeutics, an innovative biotech startup currently in its preclinical phase. Moonlight is on a mission to develop new treatments for the millions of people suffering from food allergies, with a particular focus on peanut allergies. Their groundbreaking therapy, known as MOON101, utilizes a special skin stamp to deliver medication effectively, offering a promising solution to a serious problem.
Recently, Moonlight raised over $5 million through a Series A investment round, co-led by Portal, to help them evaluate MOON101 in its initial clinical trial. Other notable investors, such as Allerfund and Invest Georgia, also joined the round. This fresh funding comes on top of an earlier $3 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which is just incredible!
The story behind Moonlight’s formation is deeply personal for its co-founders. Although none of their children are affected by food allergies, they have heard stories from friends detailing the severe challenges families face regarding food allergy management. Co-founder Patel highlighted, “Unlike seasonal or respiratory allergies, there is a real risk of a fatal reaction if you have a food allergy. The last thing we want to hear about is a child dying from a completely preventable allergic reaction.” It’s clear that this venture is driven by a strong motivation to make a real difference in people’s lives.
The new facility at Science Square is not just any lab space; it’s designed to foster collaboration among biotech and medtech startups, resembling a technological innovation hub that blends research and entrepreneurship. According to Portal, this initiative could significantly bolster Atlanta’s reputation in the biotech field. They are already seeing interest from startups based as far away as Boston, New York, North Carolina’s Research Triangle, and California, all drawn to Atlanta’s more affordable costs for scaling startups.
The design of the Portal facility is particularly striking, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that offer sweeping views of the Atlanta skyline—a refreshing change from the typical dark, cramped lab settings many startups are accustomed to. This open and inviting atmosphere, as described by Suna Lumeh, Portal’s Director of Platform and Ecosystem, helps break down the barriers separating life sciences from the wider tech community in Atlanta. “We want to make life sciences feel less abstract and more integrated with the tech ecosystem,” she explains.
The grand opening celebration is scheduled for September 24, and Portal Innovations is eager to create a sense of community by hosting monthly events. This investment marks a significant turning point for Atlanta’s biotech sector, potentially ushering in a new era of innovation and collaboration that will fuel future success stories.
For those keen on following the journey of startups like Moonlight Therapeutics and the broader impact of Portal Innovations in Atlanta, there’s a lot to look forward to in the coming months!
