Every March, representatives from all over Georgia gather together but not only for bills, causes, and constituents. There is another reason that has all the lawmakers buzzing – the competition for the enviable title of “Best-Dressed Lawmaker”. This unique contest has grown into a much-anticipated event, generating excitement, controversy, and some fiercely stylish outfits.
The “Best-Dressed Lawmakers” list was a brainchild of the respected government reporter, Maya T. Prabhu, who came up with the concept four years ago when she noticed the remarkable outfits sported by some of the lawmakers. The first list featured a top 10 lineup with the likes of Senator Elena Parent, Senator Mike Dugan, and Representative Park Cannon, setting the bar high for the years to come.
What was initially a light-hearted feature swiftly transformed into one of the most challenging political competitions in Georgia, with lawmakers vying for the coveted title. The contest is taken so seriously that legislators frequently approach Prabhu to show off their outfits of the day, hoping to make a lasting impression. Prabhu recounted one lawmaker who went to the extent of having all his suits altered, hoping that would better his chances of winning.
Every year Prabhu scrutinizes lawmakers on their sense of style, keeping an eye out for new entrants. A non-repetition policy ensures variety and a bevvy of new faces each year. It’s not just a hit among lawmakers; the readers look forward to the list which culminates in an official photo session of the well-dressed winners.
Although Prabhu insists that she holds no concrete fashion credentials, her sharp take on style based on experiences from Project Runway and America’s Next Top Model has heralded her as the chief fashion critic of the Georgia General Assembly.
This year, to manage the growing competition (and perhaps rising controversy), a new angle was introduced. The contest will now feature a 16-lawmaker bracket, including new style nominees pitted against past winners, with the public being allowed to cast their votes on favorites. The winner of this one-of-a-kind contest will be announced towards the end of the session in late March.
From legislators to readers, this exciting competition continues to capture everyone’s imagination, fueling fierce competition and upping the style quotient in the hallowed halls of the Georgia General Assembly.
