Atlanta, known for its vibrant hip-hop culture, just got a little brighter with the exciting news that Dre Jones, a Georgia State University student and emerging rapper, has won the much-anticipated second season of Netflix’s hit competition show, Rhythm and Flow. The show is a thrilling reality series where aspiring rappers battle, pen original tracks, and perform their hearts out in front of a panel made up of some of the industry’s biggest names.
In this season, DreTL stood out among 22 talented artists hailing from all across the nation. The star-studded judges included Latto, Dj Khalid, and honorary Georgia State alumni, Ludacris. Contestants from the Southern region also included other aspiring names like Būnduke, Honie Gold, and Tony Da Kidd, all showcasing their unique styles. It was a true celebration of Southern talent!
So, what exactly is Rhythm and Flow? According to Netflix, the show challenges contestants to “compete in battles, pen new tracks, and deliver unforgettable performances to impress the all-star judges” for a chance to win a whopping $250,000. DreTL’s victory not only earns him cash but also promises to catalyze his career in ways that many can only dream of. Just ask season one winner, D Smoke, who has since garnered two Grammy nominations and collaborated with legends like Snoop Dogg!
The esteemed Ludacris also opened up about the show’s significance. He told the media, “This is needed. You know, it inspires people. It gives you a landscape of what’s going on in the world and how hungry artists are from all walks of life.” His emphasis on Atlanta’s role in hip-hop is spot-on, as our city has become a true melting pot of creativity. “You just see so many different styles and people using their creativity to express themselves,” he added. Truly inspiring!
DreTL himself expressed his gratitude in a recent interview, sharing that this win means the world to him. “I am doing what I love, and I will not take it for granted,” he said. He also reflected on what set him apart from the competition, according to his judge Ludacris. “It was his heart.” Ludacris praised DreTL for his commitment to improving day by day, making him a relatable figure in this journey towards success.
DreTL, now that he’s cashing in on his victory, is looking ahead. “I just want to continue to create genuine, good art,” he expressed. Interestingly, he’s not overly concerned with charts or accolades. “As long as I’m able to do that, I’ll be happy,” he said, underscoring his desire to connect with the world through his music.
Balancing his newfound fame, Dre Jones is still a senior at the School of Music within the College of the Arts at Georgia State. He contributes to the campus community as a certified entertainer for the National Collegiate Entertainers Group (NCEG). Thanks to GSU, he’s had opportunities to showcase his music at various events, including the GSU Carnival and the “Moguls” college competition.
As DreTL embarks on this exciting new chapter, it’s evident that Atlanta continues to lead the way in the evolution of the hip-hop scene. With passionate artists like DreTL climbing the ranks, the future looks incredibly bright for our city and its music. We can’t wait to see what’s next for this talented rising star!
