ATLANTA – Residents of Metro Atlanta should be aware of several road closures this weekend due to several construction projects taking place in the area. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is urging drivers to be aware of these changes to avoid potential delays. Here’s what you need to know:
I-285 Resurfacing Project in DeKalb County
Motorists traveling along Interstate 285 in DeKalb County should expect delays due to a resurfacing project. The project, which is situated between Ashford Dunwoody Road and Lavista Road, is set to continue this weekend, beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday, July 26 and concluding at 6 a.m. on Monday, July 29. Motorists are advised to expect traffic delays, consider alternate routes and account for additional travel time. This $38 million maintenance initiative is anticipated to wrap up in late fall 2024.
I-20 Milling and Paving in Douglas, Cobb, and Fulton Counties
Interstate 20, situated west of Atlanta, is another area where commuters will experience disruptions. Roadway milling and paving activities are set to continue this weekend, affecting drivers in Douglas, Cobb, and Fulton Counties. This operation will involve alternating double left or right lane closures on I-20 beginning Friday, July 26, and ending on Monday morning, July 29.
Lane Closures on SR3/Tara Blvd in Clayton County
Motorists should anticipate lane closures on State Route 3/Tara Boulevard (SR 3) due to widening and reconstruction activities. Beginning on Friday, July 26, “rolling” single right or left lane closures will be employed, and these will move with the crew as they progress from one area to the next. The $28.3 million project is estimated to be complete in summer 2024.
I-285 Safety Project in Clayton County
Lane closures will also be enforced along I-285 between Riverdale Road and I-75 in Clayton County due to ongoing safety improvements. Work is expected to begin at 9 p.m. on Friday, July 26, and continue until 5 a.m. on Monday, July 29. As construction proceeds in one area, the closures will “roll” to the next. The project, valued at $318,000, aims to be complete by late summer 2024.
Marietta’s SR 5 Resurfacing
State Route 5/West Atlanta Street in Marietta is undergoing a resurfacing venture, which will see the implementation of a single lane closure in the area over the weekend. The lane closures are designed to ensure the safety of motorists and the construction team and will run from 6 p.m. on Friday, July 26, until 6 a.m. the following morning, and again on Sunday, July 28. The project is worth $1.1 million and is expected to conclude in fall 2024.
I-75 Restriping in Fulton and Cobb Counties
The Georgia Department of Transportation has contracted work on Interstate 75, involving restriping the roadway between the Chattahoochee River and Canton Road. The work entails the application of high-reflective striping to enhance driver visibility during wet weather conditions and will cause lane closures each weekend night starting from Friday, July 26.
