Metro Atlanta is gearing up for a chilly weekend as temperatures are expected to plunge. With a weather impact alert in place, residents should prepare for frost and possible power outages due to severe storms. Areas like Fulton and DeKalb counties are already experiencing outages, affecting over 30,000 residents. As residents bundle up, they can look forward to warmer weather around Christmas. Stay safe and watch for further weather developments throughout the weekend.
Hey there, Atlanta! The weather this weekend is going to be quite a mixed bag, so grab that hot cocoa and snuggle up! Meteorologists have issued a Weather Impact Alert that has the whole metro area buzzing with excitement (and a little bit of concern). As temperatures are set to plunge, you might want to check your winter gear. Let’s break down what’s happening!
First up, prepare for a dramatic drop in temperatures! On Sunday morning, we will be waking up to a frosty 20-degree chill. It’s a good time to scrape off that ice from your car because areas of frost are expected to blanket the region. If frostbite is on your mind, it should be, as the afternoon temperatures will only reach the chilly 40s.
Don’t be too bummed out though! If you can hold on until Christmas Day, you’re in for some much warmer weather. So, keep that in your holiday plans!
Before we get to the cold, however, Atlanta has some storms rolling in, and they’re not your average rain showers. A severe thunderstorm watch is currently in effect until 10 p.m. tonight for much of the region, which includes our beloved Atlanta. The meteorological team has highlighted that the main concern will be damaging winds, so batten down the hatches!
Several counties are feeling the effects of this stormy weather with severe thunderstorm warnings. This includes Henry, Butts, Spalding, Fayette, Jasper, Pike, and Lamar, to name a few until 9:30 p.m. Just think of it as a friendly reminder that you might want to stay indoors. Storms are expected to weaken as they get closer to us, but stay alert!
As with any severe weather, power outages can be an issue. Reports indicate over 23,000 residents without power by 4:46 p.m. today. By 7:46 p.m., the number skyrocketed to approximately 30,000 residents facing outages across Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, and Cherokee counties. Now would be a great time to grab some candles!
Let’s not forget about our beautiful trees. Approximately 50 trees have been reported down in a community in Pickens County, blocking several roads. Keep an eye out, Atlanta, as the Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency noted multiple downed trees and outages in Downtown and Midtown.
While this weekend marks a shift to cooler temperatures, it follows a broader pattern with a cold snap expected in North Georgia after Thanksgiving Day. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center suggests that we might be in for an above-average winter here in the Southeast due to a weak La Niña weather pattern, limiting our chances for snowfall. So, if you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, you may need to adjust those expectations!
As always, stay informed and safe. Make sure to check for weather alerts as things unfold. It’s best to have the right information at your fingertips. And remember, this severe weather won’t last long, so hang in there, Atlanta!
