Community vigilance is vital during stormy weather to avert further mishaps.

Tree Troubles in Atlanta’s Candler Park Neighborhood

Atlanta has found itself dealing with some unexpected challenges this week as a strong storm led to a dramatic incident in the charming Candler Park neighborhood. Early Wednesday morning, at roughly 1:30 a.m., residents were startled awake when a massive tree came crashing down onto a duplex located on the 400 block of Euclid Terrace NE.

A Close Call for Residents

Fortunately, it seems like luck was on the side of the five residents inside the home, as there were no injuries reported. Fire rescue crews quickly made their way to the scene and were able to assess the situation promptly. Upon arrival, they found the hefty tree sprawled across the back of the duplex, which caused considerable damage to the structure.

As a result, the displaced residents are currently on the hunt for temporary accommodations while repairs are underway. It’s a tough position to be in, but we can certainly thank our lucky stars that everyone is safe and sound.

More Tree Issues Across Atlanta

But this wasn’t the only tree-related incident in Atlanta that day! Over in northwest Atlanta, a tree also took down power lines on Johnson Street, which effectively blocked the road. On top of that, around 162 residents found themselves without power due to this fallen tree. Talk about a double whammy!

Adding to this tree chaos, another downed tree on Neal Street led to further road blockages and left about 50 homes without electricity. If you happen to be in that area, Georgia Power has estimated that power should be restored by around 10:15 a.m., so hang tight!

Tree Woes and Homeowner Responsibilities

This string of events has once again highlighted the importance of being aware of the trees around our homes, especially during stormy weather. As we’ve seen, heavy rains can lead to trees tipping over, causing damage and disruption to our lives.

Now, it’s essential for all property owners to know that the responsibility for trees on private property lies entirely with them. On the flip side, public trees fall under the watchful eye of the City of Atlanta. If you’re concerned about a tree’s safety, be on the lookout for signs that it might be at risk of falling. Things to keep an eye on include fungus at the base, large cavities, full leaves on thinning trees, and an unusual drop of branches that are over six inches in diameter.

What to Do About Hazardous Trees

Should you spot a potentially hazardous tree, you can request an inspection through the Dead, Dying, or Hazardous (DHH) inspection request process. It’s worth noting that unauthorized tree removal can lead to some serious fines that are comparable to the cost of a car or a small house. Definitely not what you want to deal with!

Safety is the top priority, so if you encounter a fallen tree on the road, make sure to report it to the appropriate city departments. And if a public tree has caused damage and you believe compensation might be due, you’ll need to reach out to The City of Atlanta’s Law Department for assistance.

Keep Your Neighborhood Safe

As we continue navigating this stormy season, let’s keep an eye out for each other and our beloved trees. Community care means being proactive about safety, and with a little vigilance, we can help avoid further mishaps. Stay safe, Atlanta!
