Atlanta’s Theatrical Season Kicks Off with 65th Anniversary of A Raisin in the Sun

Atlanta’s Theatrical Season Opens with Lorraine Hansberry’s ”A Raisin in the Sun”

ATLANTA – This year marks a significant milestone as we celebrate the 65th anniversary of Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun”. Back in 1959, this groundbreaking play became the first piece penned by a Black woman to be produced on Broadway. Fast forward to today, Atlanta audiences are gearing up for a special treat as the play returns to the stage, showcasing why it continues to be hailed as one of the greatest ever written.

The Return of a Classic

Theatrical Outfit and Dominion Entertainment Group have joined forces to present “A Raisin in the Sun”, which opens tonight in previews and runs through September 29th at The Balzer Theater at Herren’s, located in Downtown Atlanta. This revival is expected to capture the same essence and power that enthralled audiences decades ago.

The limited run consists of 15 performances, so if you’re planning to attend, mark your calendar! The direction is spearheaded by Dominion Entertainment Group’s executive producer Robert John Connor, ensuring a production that resonates both artistically and culturally.

A Stellar Cast and Strong Collaborations

This production features a remarkable cast of Atlanta-based actors, including the talents of Cynthia D. Barker, Amari Cheatom, and Jen Harper. Their performances are set to breathe new life into the iconic characters created by Hansberry, promising an unforgettable theatrical experience.

It’s worth noting that this is the first collaboration between Theatrical Outfit and Dominion Entertainment Group—a significant partnership, given their shared commitment to powerful storytelling and community engagement. Theatrical Outfit, founded in 1976, has built a reputation for producing compelling works. Meanwhile, Dominion Entertainment Group is known for beloved productions such as “Black Nativity: A Gospel Christmas Musical Experience”.

The Season Ahead

As the 2024-2025 season opener, “A Raisin in the Sun” sets the stage, quite literally, for an exciting lineup. Following this production, theater enthusiasts can look forward to the cherished family classic “A Christmas Story”, the Atlanta premiere of “The Lehman Trilogy”, and the world premiere Hip-hop musical “Young John Lewis” later in the season.

For those eager to witness this celebrated play, showtimes are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. from Wednesday through Saturday, and at 2:30 p.m. on Sundays, running through September 29th. Make sure to secure your tickets early, as this limited run promises to attract theater-goers from all over the city.
