News Summary

The Georgia Department of Transportation is conducting a feasibility study for a passenger rail service connecting Atlanta and Savannah. Georgia DOT Studies Feasibility of Passenger Rail Service Between Atlanta and Savannah

Exploring New Transportation Options

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is currently working on a feasibility study for a potential passenger rail service that would link Atlanta and Savannah. This initiative seeks to offer a more convenient mode of travel between two of Georgia’s most vibrant cities. Currently, residents and visitors face a four-hour drive or lengthy train trips that may require multiple transfers and extend travel time to over 24 hours.

Preliminary Planning Stages

As part of the planning process, GDOT is examining potential routes, station locations, and possible operators for the proposed rail service. However, it’s important to note that there is no guarantee of construction for the rail line at this time, as the study is still in its early stages.

Encouraging Public Participation

Public input is a vital part of this project. GDOT has set up an online survey that invites the community to share their thoughts and preferences regarding this potential rail service. This feedback is crucial as it will help shape the project’s direction and decisions.

Funding and Development Plans

The feasibility study is supported by a substantial federal investment of $8 million, complemented by an additional $2 million from Georgia’s state rail budget. Together, these funds will aid in the creation of a Service Development Plan, which will investigate the demand for the rail service and evaluate its financial viability, service features, and environmental impacts. GDOT expects to complete this comprehensive plan by early 2028.

Additional Rail Projects on the Horizon

In addition to the Atlanta-Savannah rail service, GDOT is exploring several other rail initiatives. These include potential projects for the Atlanta-Chattanooga-Nashville-Memphis Corridor and the Atlanta-Charlotte Corridor. Furthermore, GDOT is also considering Amtrak’s Daily Long-Distance Service Study to enhance travel options across the region.

Local Support for Rail Connectivity

Support for the project is reflected by Savannah’s mayor, who underscores the need for improved regional connectivity. This rail service could potentially include stops in areas such as Statesboro, Dublin, and Macon, with future connections to Florida also being contemplated.

Stakeholder Engagement and Future Plans

GDOT has initiated and will continue to hold stakeholder meetings, providing local experts with the opportunity to contribute to the project. As part of its future efforts, the department plans to identify possible funding sources and develop a phased implementation plan for the rail service by 2026-2027.
