Atlanta Ends 30-Day Dry Spell with Trace Amount of Rain

Atlanta Finally Breaks Its Dry Spell!

Hey there, folks! If you’ve been looking at the skies in Atlanta and wondering if it would ever rain again, well, I’ve got some news for you! After a bone-dry period of 30 days—yes, you heard it right, 30 whole days with no real rain—Mother Nature finally decided to offer us a teeny, tiny consolation shower.

What’s Going On in the Sky?

This morning, over at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, a light drizzle contributed a trace amount of rain. Now, before you go looking for your umbrella, let me clarify—this was less than 0.01 inches. That’s like, maybe the moisture level of a sneeze or a combination of sweat droplets 😅!

How Does This Fit Into the Bigger Picture?

You might be thinking, “Is this even enough to make any difference?” Well, in terms of vegetation and drought, not much, really. But technically, this lovely trace was just enough to end the rain-free streak that had dragged on since September 29th when a similar scant amount of 0.02 inches of rain was recorded. Still, it’s safe to say that this month remains tied for being one of the driest Octobers on record here in Atlanta.

History in the Making!

For those who love quirky records, this 30-day dry spell has tied for the 8th longest streak we’ve had since record-keeping began way back in 1878! If you think that’s impressive, let me remind you of Atlanta’s longest dry streak, which lasted a whopping 43 days back in late October to much of November 2016. That’s over a month without rain!

What About the Rest of the Year?

Now, don’t be under the impression that we haven’t had any rain at all this year. In fact, thanks to a deluge of rains in September and July, we are actually sitting on a 14-inch surplus for the year. We’ve had more than our fair share of soggy shoes earlier in 2023, even if October is looking grim.

What’s Next?

Looking ahead, there is a window of opportunity for a few showers here and there, but it seems like these will be spotty at best. So, while the sky might tease us with some sprinkles, don’t expect your lawn to turn lush and green just yet. The seven-day forecast isn’t throwing us a lifeline of serious, widespread rain either, so keep those watering cans handy if you have plants depending on you!

Keep Your Heads Up!

While today’s microscopic rain event isn’t exactly headline-grabbing, it’s a comforting sign that the sky remembers how to drizzle. But don’t start celebrating just yet—it’s still a dry October for the books. So, fellow Atlanta residents, keep doing the rain dance, and maybe November will be more generous.

That’s all for now, stay dry—or wet, as the weather permits! 😊

Next up in 5: Stay tuned, we’ll have more updates on this light drop of excitement the moment the next cloud decides to give us a little more!
