Atlanta Public Schools Look to Gain Teachers, Bus Drivers, and Resource Officers in Hiring Event

Atlanta Public Schools (APS) is on a mission to fill multiple crucial positions this year, including teachers, bus drivers, and school resource officers. To fulfill this goal, the district organized a teacher and operations hiring event at D.M. Therrell High School on Saturday morning.

Teacher Vacancies

Tiffany Adams, APS’ program manager for recruitment and human resources, highlighted the urgent need for teachers in special education, high school math, science, and world languages. The district is also seeking school resource officers, bus drivers, fleet mechanics, and other essential staff members.

A spokesperson from APS disclosed that the district currently requires 40 bus drivers and 30 school resource officers to meet its operational needs. Dr. Robin Christian, principal of Barack and Michelle Obama Academy, emphasized the critical role of school resource officers in fostering a safe and nurturing environment for students.

Safety Concerns

In light of recent school shootings in the metro Atlanta area, including the incident at Benjamin E. Mays High School where four students were injured, Dr. Christian stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of students. She underscored the significant impact that school resource officers have on preventive measures and educational programming within schools.

Dr. Christian expressed gratitude towards APS for not only addressing academic vacancies but also recognizing the need for additional counselors and school psychologists to support students and families facing various challenges.

Hiring Progress

While the exact number of teacher vacancies will not be confirmed until April, APS remains optimistic about filling the positions in time for the next school year. Tiffany Adams highlighted the district’s track record of successfully hiring staff well in advance, with a historical fill rate of 99% by the start of the school year.
