Get ready, Atlanta! The long-awaited _Public Safety Training Center_, affectionately dubbed “_Cop City_” by locals, is just about to sprint across the finish line, with its grand opening expected later this month.
Over the past three years, a group of dedicated community members has worked tirelessly to provide their invaluable input on the center’s development. This committee gathered for their _final meeting_ over Zoom on Thursday, Dec. 5. Alan Williams, who’s been the _project manager with the Atlanta Police Foundation (APF)_, shared exciting news during the meeting—_final inspections_ and last-minute touch-ups are underway.
Mayor Andre Dickens, speaking at a recent Rotary Club meet, hinted that although a sneak preview is just around the corner, a _formal inauguration_ will be staged once warmer weather graces the city. As chilly December days creep in, city officials are ensuring everything is tiptop before the ribbon is cut.
With the outward embrace of new beginnings, there’s been a bolstering of security to address “_continued threats of violence_,” leading to the local council approving an additional _1.7 million dollars_. All eyes are on new security additions such as _facial recognition technology_ which could be sprinkled throughout the facility including its public spaces.
Yet, surprisingly, the Community Stakeholder Advisory Committee (CASC) members have yet to walk through the gleaming halls of the new center. Anticipation seems to run in every corner!
LaChandra Burks, the chief operating officer for the bustling City of Atlanta, made sure to convey a heartfelt thank you from the mayor. She expressed gratitude to committee members for their hard work and collaboration. Mayor Dickens is looking forward to extending personal invitations for the facility’s preview, as shared by Burks.
With construction wrapping up, APD is making plans to gradually transition their personnel over to the new site _as the New Year rolls in. Marshall Freeman, APD’s Chief Administrative Officer, detailed that they will be among the first to experience the fresh facility, settled comfortably at the _top of the year_.
Though still shrouded in a bit of mystery, this civic marvel will soon unfold its banner as a center capable of developing our safety agents and police officers, imbuing them with skills and innovation. Expect conversations to continue as Atlantans help shape the future of public safety!
