Atlanta’s Culinary Scene Shines with the Return of Michelin Guide Awards

It’s an exciting time for food enthusiasts in Atlanta as the city gears up for the much-anticipated Michelin Guide Awards Ceremony on October 28th. The prestigious event, set to take place at the Georgia World Congress Center, marks its second year in the city. Known for its rigorous and anonymous evaluations, the Michelin Guide has once again set its sights on the diverse and thriving culinary scene of Atlanta.

A Closer Look at the Michelin Impact

Last year, the Michelin Guide awarded coveted one-star ratings to local favorites like Atlas, Bacchanalia, Hayakawa, Lazy Betty, and Mujo. These accolades have undeniably left a mark, not just on the restaurants, but on Atlanta’s culinary reputation as a whole. The presence of Michelin has brought a spotlight on the city, attracting both new patrons and culinary talent.

Aaron Phillips, co-founder and executive chef of Lazy Betty, described the impact as a whopping “20 to 30 percent increase in business almost immediately.” He credits the Michelin recognition with helping attract top-tier talent from around the country to work in his bustling kitchen. The restaurant, which relocated to Midtown from Candler Park, found the timing of their move serendipitous, aligning perfectly with their new-found Michelin status.

Atlas, another one-star winner, has seen an “exponential growth” in interest from global chefs wanting to learn and train in Atlanta. With initiatives like the “Four Hands Collaboration Series,” chef Freddy Money has been able to collaborate with Michelin-starred chefs worldwide, offering diners unique, one-off tasting opportunities.

The Economics Behind the Guide

Interestingly, it’s the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau who is footing the bill for this gastronomic spotlight. By channeling $1 million from private donor funding (no taxpayer dollars involved), the Bureau secured a three-year contract with Michelin, which could potentially be renewed beyond 2025. This financial commitment further underscores the belief in Atlanta’s burgeoning status as a culinary hub.

Andrew Wilson, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of the Bureau, suggests that we might see a broader recognition of restaurants beyond the central Atlanta perimeter this year. While a two-star rating might not be on the immediate horizon, Wilson highlights the “significant growth potential” needed to attain such a prestigious accolade.

Beyond Stars: Representation and Growth

For Mia Orino, chef and co-owner of Kamayan ATL, the Michelin recommendation not only brought a “20 to 25 percent growth” in business but also vital representation for Filipino cuisine. With Kamayan being one of only 12 Filipino restaurants recognized by the Michelin Guide in the U.S., Orino feels humbled by the chance to showcase her culture on such a notable platform.

Michelin’s presence has encouraged diversity in the city’s dining scene, with a noted surge in non-Filipino diners eager to explore Kamayan’s offerings. Orino is optimistic about the future, planning to expand to a second location while keeping the focus on delivering authentic, flavorful experiences.

The Road Ahead

As the Michelin Guide evaluators prepare for another round of anonymous inspections, local restaurants are abuzz with anticipation. With a focus on consistent high-quality cooking and sustainable practices, Atlanta’s dining establishments strive to maintain or elevate their ratings.

Whether it’s a star, a Bib Gourmand status, or a recommendation, being featured in the Michelin Guide profoundly influences not just the restaurant itself but the entire culinary landscape of Atlanta. As the city awaits the announcement, there’s a palpable excitement and a sense of pride in the diverse, vibrant flavors that make up the city’s gastronomic tapestry.
