Hey Atlanta! Get your telescopes and cameras ready! The final supermoon of 2024 is gracing our skies, making it a night to remember. Scheduled to reach full glory and rise over our city at precisely 5:18 p.m., this celestial event is definitely something you’ll want to witness—a spectacular display, especially over Midtown!
You might be wondering why it’s called the “beaver moon.” Well, according to our trusty Farmer’s Almanac, around this time of year, beavers are busy preparing for the chill of winter. Of course, the November full moon has another name up its sleeve—the “frost moon,” which sounds much more relatable! Either way, it’s an event to look forward to.
This moon isn’t just any full moon. It’s the grand finale in a series of four consecutive supermoons in 2024. As it rises, you might notice it appearing slightly bigger and brighter than your average full moon. Why? Because it’s at its perigee, aka the closest point in its elliptical orbit around Earth. How cool is that?
Even though there’s a lot of hoopla about supermoons, they’re not exactly rare. On average, we get to see about three to four each year. But don’t worry, if you miss this one, the next supermoon is happening in October 2025. Mark your calendars, folks!
Hold onto your hats, because the weather’s on our side for a change. The forecast is calling for clear skies Friday night—perfect for catching a glimpse of the supermoon. Just bundle up, because it’s going to be chilly. As luck would have it, you’ll be able to see this beauty anytime throughout the night, since it won’t set until 8:08 a.m. Saturday morning.
Looking to catch the action live? You can tune in to see stunning views over Midtown Atlanta. Or simply step outside with your loved ones, a warm cup of cocoa in hand, and look up at the sky—it’s bound to be a memorable night!
Remember, for those who live by notifications and want more updates on exciting astronomical events or breaking news, there are several streaming options available around the clock on popular platforms. Just make sure those notifications are turned on (or off, if you like the peace and quiet) in your browser settings.
So, Atlantians, don’t miss this chance to witness the final supermoon of 2024. It’s not just a moon, but a magical prelude to chilly winter nights. Round up your friends and family, find a comfy spot, and let the universe show off one of its brightest wonders.
