Atlanta has come together to celebrate the life of a cherished voice in the community, Wanda Smith, who recently passed away shortly after commemorating her birthday. A well-known radio star and comedian, Wanda Smith has left an indelible mark on the hearts of many Atlantans.
The community is preparing to pay their respects beginning with a public viewing on Sunday, November 3rd. Hosted at Willie Watkins Funeral Home on Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard SW, attendees can offer their condolences from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The following day, November 4th, friends, family, and fans will gather for her homegoing service at 11 a.m. at Word of Faith Cathedral in Austell.
Wanda Smith began her influential career at V-103, previously known as WVEE-FM, back in 1998. As a co-host of the popular “Frank and Wanda in the Morning” show, she charmed and entertained audiences for over two decades. Her unique presence on the air was only briefly interrupted in 2013, but Wanda made a triumphant return the following year, co-hosting with Ryan Cameron. Her long tenure at the station ended when she was let go in 2019. Her dedication to the Atlanta radio scene has since solidified her as a beloved figure.
Beyond her infectious presence over the radio waves, Wanda was also a remarkable comedian. She was known for her talent in writing for people’s favorite comedy shows like “Def Comedy Jam” and BET’s “Comicview.” She made sure to keep the laughter flowing with her regular performances at the Atlanta Comedy Theater in Norcross, lighting up the room with her humor and wit. Or, as some might say, her unforgettable contribution to comedy was truly laugh-out-loud.
Her fans also got a chance to see her talent on the big screen, as she appeared in several comedy films directed by the well-known Tyler Perry. Motion pictures such as “Madea Goes to Jail” and “Madea’s Witness Protection” featured her comedic prowess, endearing her further to audiences.
Wanda leaves behind her husband, LaMorris Sellers, their sons, and her dear grandchildren. Her sudden departure has left a void in her family’s lives, as well as the community she entertained for so many years. Yet it is clear that her legacy of joy and laughter will continue to echo in the hearts of those she touched.
The community will take time this coming weekend to remember not only the beloved radio personality that she was but also the warmth and humor that she shared so freely. While the cause of her death has not yet been shared, those who knew Wanda or were touched by her work will take this time to cherish her memory, celebrating the life of a woman who knew how to make people smile.
Indeed, Wanda Smith was not just a voice on the airwaves but a vibrant part of Atlanta’s tapestry, and she will certainly be missed.
