Atlanta Opera Unveils “Bohème Project,” Merging Classic Opera with Broadway Musical in Pandemic-Themed Performances

Atlanta’s Operatic Symphony of Pandemics: A Journey From Puccini to Larson

Hey, Atlanta! Get ready to experience a powerful fusion of classic opera and modern musical theater with an awe-inspiring twist. The Atlanta Opera is bringing an electrifying new dimension to its stage with their modern-day production of La bohème, intertwined with the Broadway sensation, Rent – and they’re doing it immersed in the stories of three different pandemics.

This riveting journey begins this September at Atlanta’s esteemed Pullman Yards, where the Opera’s Discoveries series will present alternating performances of La bohème and Rent, two masterworks connected by themes of survival, love, and artistic passion. This innovative undertaking, known as the “Bohème Project,” is spearheaded by General & Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun along with multifaceted artist Vita Tzykun.

What to Expect in This Unique Production

For those who revere the sweeping romance of La bohème, but sometimes forget its gritty backdrop of a devastating tuberculosis pandemic, this production will hit close to home. Now set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, the opera highlights how these crises redefine a generation, much like tuberculosis did in the 19th century.

Zvulun shares: “La bohème is such a romantic, sweeping opera that we forget sometimes that the story is about the impact on a whole generation of a devastating pandemic, in this case tuberculosis, which ravaged the world in the 19th century. Our own generation has been forever altered by the COVID-19 pandemic, and its impact will be with us for many years to come.”

The magic doesn’t stop with only one pandemic. The Discoveries series uniquely pairs this classic opera with Jonathan Larson’s Rent, a rock musical set amidst the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1990s. Performed on the same set as La bohème, the shows alternate nights and share the themes of love, friendship, and the resilience of the human spirit. Rent’s raw emotion, unforgettable music, and heart-pounding energy promise to captivate audiences in ways you’ve never seen before.

A Double Dose of Drama

For a truly immersive experience, mark your calendars for September 22 and 29, where you can catch both La bohème and Rent performed back-to-back. These special nights offer a rare chance to witness how these two parallel stories are told through very different yet equally powerful artistic mediums.

La bohème will be sung in Italian with English supertitles, while Rent will be performed in English. These productions aren’t merely about the music but about the shared human experiences of loss, hope, and survival through challenging times.

The Perfect Venue

Pullman Yards, a venue celebrated for its unique blend of history and modernity, sets the perfect stage for these groundbreaking productions. This industrial space not only brings a unique atmosphere but also connects to Atlanta’s roots, making for a memorable night out. After enjoying these performances, consider visiting Fishmonger, one of Bon Appetit’s best new restaurants of 2023, to complete your experience.

More To Look Out For

The Atlanta Opera’s Discoveries series has garnered much acclaim for its innovative takes and fresh perspectives, often performing in alternative venues to attract new audiences from across the metro area. If you’re interested in a profound theatrical experience this fall, be sure to catch these shows.

Additionally, the city’s cultural calendar is packed with notable events. The Alliance Theatre is gearing up for the 23rd annual Palefsky Collision Project, a creative endeavor giving local teens a stage to shine. Meanwhile, ART Station’s beloved family Halloween event is returning for its 39th year at Georgia’s Historic Square in Stone Mountain Park. Plus, don’t miss the star-studded production of Little Shop of Horrors in Serenbe.

All in all, Atlanta is truly the place to be for the arts and culture scene this fall. Don’t miss out on these exceptional performances that interweave past and present in an unforgettable tapestry of music, emotion, and resilience.
