ATLANTA, Ga. – It’s a bittersweet moment as family, friends, and the community prepare to celebrate the life of Thelma Wyatt Cummings Moore, a remarkable woman who broke barriers and left an indelible mark on the legal landscape of Georgia. She passed away peacefully at the ripe age of 79 on October 9th in her beloved city of Atlanta.

This isn’t just another obituary; it’s a chance to delve into the incredible achievements of a woman who shattered glass ceilings and changed lives. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane and revisit the awe-inspiring legacy of Judge Moore, shall we?

Breaking Barriers and Setting Records

Hold onto your hats, because Judge Thelma Moore was a true pioneer. She claimed the title of being the first African-American woman to sit on the City Court of Atlanta, a groundbreaking achievement that set the tone for countless women of color to follow in her footsteps. But that’s not all she did! She went on to be the first woman to serve as chief judge of the Fulton County Superior Court and the first African-American woman to take the reins as the chief administrative judge for any judicial circuit in Georgia. Now that’s a legacy that’ll make you sit up in your chair!

A Career of Distinction

Judge Moore’s career was a shining example of “leading by example.” Her impeccable work ethic earned her the prestigious Judicial Excellence Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Diversity and Inclusion from the Georgia State Bar Association. Imagine the smiles these awards must have brought to her school-aged self, who dreamed of making a difference someday!

According to the Fulton County District Attorney, Judge Moore’s legacy was one of unparalleled leadership, unwavering commitment, and a heartful devotion to justice. Her values of integrity, fairness, and compassion in every ruling set a golden standard for others.

Honoring a Remarkable Legacy

This week, the city unites to honor Judge Moore’s memory and accomplishments. On Thursday, a public viewing will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Willie A. Watkins Historic West End Chapel for those who wish to pay their respects. The celebrations of her vibrant life continue the next morning at 11 a.m. with a service at the Cascade United Methodist Church on Cascade Road. Word on the street is it’ll be packed with folks brimming with fond memories and heartfelt tributes.

The Moore family has kindly requested that, instead of sending flowers, donations be made to Dada Sisterhood Inc., a scholarship program established in Judge Moore’s honor. How lovely to know that future generations will have opportunities crafted by her lasting contributions!

Carrying On the Torch

Survived by her brother, sister, and a joyful gaggle of nieces, nephews, and cousins, Judge Moore’s lineage will carry on her torch as a reminder of what one determined soul can achieve. Her groundbreaking career and compassionate spirit serve as a powerful reminder of the changes one committed individual can make—even shaping the future of a legal system!
