Atlanta’s most prominent law firms experienced a variety of outcomes in the recent Am Law 100 rankings, with some firms climbing in rank and others witnessing a decline.
Seven major companies located in the Southeast retained their positions in the newly released Am Law 100 rankings this year. While three firms witnessed a drop in the rankings, three others managed to climb, and the highest-ranking firm managed to maintain its current position.
In particular, the law firm of Nelson Mullins improved its ranking by three spots, whereas Troutman Pepper experienced a drop of six positions in the rankings.
The rankings offer an informative barometer of each firm’s growth during the year 2023, measured against the performances of other large firms, helping to determine whether or not these firms are keeping pace with their competition.
Nationally, The Am Law 100, as a collective, experienced a revenue growth of 6.8% from 2022 to 2023, marking a significant recovery from the less impressive performance of 2022. Within this context, several Atlanta-founded law firms and others based in the Southeast managed to exceed or at least come close to this national average revenue growth.
Among the leading Atlanta law firms, King & Spalding kept its position as the city’s largest firm in the Am Law 100, maintaining its spot at No. 17. However, amongst the other four Atlanta-based law firms in the rankings, two firms were on the rise while two firms dropped in rank.
In the incredibly competitive legal industry, these shifts in rank, although seemingly small, can display potential trends in growth, revenue, and overall success. For Atlanta-founded firms, these rankings provide insight into the firms’ performance in the challenging COVID-era legal market and offer unique forecasts for the years ahead.
For these Atlanta-founded firms and others in the Southeast, these rankings demonstrate whether they are capable of keeping up with their competitors. This data will equip them to make informed decisions moving forward, and possibly pave the way for future growth and development.
