Atlanta Launches Internship Program to Empower HBCU Students with Real-World Business Skills

Atlanta’s New Internship Program Aims to Empower HBCU Students

In the vibrant city of Atlanta, a fresh initiative is taking form that promises to shine a light on the futures of local college students. Enter Shine U, a new internship program founded by a husband-and-wife duo, Danesha and Andre Smith. Their vision? To equip HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) students with the valuable skills they need to excel in the world of business.

From Experience Comes Inspiration

The Smiths know a thing or two about hard work and entrepreneurship. They have carved out their niche in the competitive restaurant scene across metro Atlanta. “When I first stepped into the business world, I didn’t have the right tools or mentorship to guide me. I had to learn it all by trial and error,” Andre shared. After navigating through the challenges and eventually finding success, he felt compelled to pay it forward.

“There are so many talented young individuals, especially from disadvantaged communities, who might not have the exposure to what being a business owner truly means,” said Danesha. This realization sparked the creation of Shine U, aimed specifically at bridging the gap between classroom theory and practical, hands-on experience.

Shine U: Bridging Education and Experience

Shine U is designed to bring college students to Atlanta for a summer filled with learning opportunities that merge their academic studies with real-life skills. “This summer, we’ll be welcoming students to work directly in our restaurants, sit in on meetings, collaborate on problem-solving, and contribute to improvements in our businesses,” Danesha explained. The Smiths are committed to fostering a deeper understanding of what it takes to run a successful business, beyond what students typically learn in classrooms.

With a focus on practical skills such as time management, networking, and even learning the game of golf, the program is geared toward producing well-rounded future leaders. “School may teach you finance or marketing, but we provide the context of how these elements work together in a bustling restaurant environment,” she said.

Real Insights from Participants

Students like De’Von Lewis and Kamir Hodge have found immense value in participating in the Shine U program. They spent two days a week learning various aspects of the business over an eight-week period. “It wasn’t just about making burgers and fries; I got to dive into understanding P&L statements and so much more,” shared Lewis. This comprehensive exposure offered them a look at both entrepreneurship and small business ownership, areas that they realized were distinctly different.

Hodge described his experience as being life-changing. “It opened my eyes to what I wasn’t doing right and motivated me to hustle harder. If you think you’re giving it your all, you might need to double that. It was truly eye-opening!” he remarked.

Lewis added, “It’s empowering to apply my leadership abilities, especially at such a young age, and in ways I never thought possible. This experience has opened up many new doors for me.”

Long-term Vision for Impact

The Smiths are committed to their mission of impacting the community and helping to close the wealth divide. “We’re here for the long haul. This is a marathon, not a sprint,” Danesha stated passionately. Their hope is to see Shine U grow and touch even more lives across the nation.

As this innovative program begins to blossom, there is no doubt that it will be a beacon of inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs in the Atlanta community and beyond. Shine U represents not just an opportunity for learning, but a pathway to success for the next generation of business leaders.
