Guess what, Atlanta? It’s that magical time of the year again! Downtown Atlanta is buzzing with excitement as Theatrical Outfit brings back the timeless holiday tradition, A CHRISTMAS STORY! Running from November 20 to December 24, 2024, this beloved classic is set to charm audiences of all ages right at the heart of our bustling city.
This year’s production promises a madcap adventure filled with laughter, nostalgia, and the heartwarming chaos of family holiday traditions. Ralphie Parker, the spunky nine-year-old, dreams and schemes for his ultimate Christmas gift – and his journey is nothing short of hysterical. With exploding furnaces, plush pink bunny pajamas, and a whimsical whirlwind of hilarious escapades, it’s a holiday experience you don’t want to miss!
Returning to this cherished story is the delightful Robin Bloodworth as The Old Man/Santa and the charming Tom Key playing Ralph. Together with an impressive cast including Brittani Minniweather as Miss Shields, Maria Rodriguez-Sager as Mother, young talents like August Smith and Max Walls as Randy (at select performances), and the talented newcomers Aniya Bent, Sully Brown, Rahul Daswani, Oliver Gold, Adrienne Ocfemia, and Michael Wood (also as Randy at other performances), this production is poised to capture hearts anew.
Artistic Director Matt Torney shares the sentimentality behind selecting this show for the season. “For so many, watching the movie surrounded by friends and family is a holiday tradition. This story invites us all to remember holidays past and lean into the present with those we love,” he commented.
Bringing the production to life is the visionary Rosemary Newcott, who directs a team of Atlanta’s finest designers. From stunning scenic designs by Alexander Whittenberg to dazzling costumes by April Andrew Carswell, plus immersive soundscapes by Tyehimba Shabazz and Multiband Studios, it’s a feast for the senses!
If your entertainment cravings are still not fully satisfied, Atlanta’s vibrant theater scene has even more to offer this season! Flash back to 1960s Baltimore with the catchy tunes and tender messages of Hairspray at Out Front Theatre Company. This feel-good musical is a celebration of equality, wrapped in humor and song.
For something original, explore the wonders of OPOSSUM AND THE SEASON STONE, an innovative production by Kennesaw State University that offers sensory experiences for viewers of all ages. Or, take a historical dive into PEARL CLEAGE’S SOMETHING MOVING: A MEDITATION ON MAYNARD at the Alliance Theatre, which commemorates Maynard Jackson’s historic election as Atlanta’s first Black mayor.
And in case you didn’t know, the clock is ticking to submit your nominations for the 2024 BroadwayWorld Atlanta Awards. Don’t let the October 31st deadline spook you!
Stay tuned, theater fans, and make this holiday season one to remember. Get your tickets early, gather your loved ones, and prepare for an unforgettable adventure through the streets of Atlanta’s theatrical landscape.
