Atlanta’s Episcopal Church Hosts Fundraising Event to Revitalize Community Space

Atlanta’s Historic Church Calls for Community Support in Fundraising Event

In the heart of Atlanta, something special is happening — a community is coming together to help a cherished historical venue revamp and continue its mission of inclusivity and spirituality. Established in 1896, the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation, Atlanta’s third-oldest Episcopal congregation, is no stranger to the trials of time. But now, it invites everyone to be part of a transformative journey that seeks to better accommodate its community members, particularly the elderly, by upgrading its infrastructure.

Arts, Marketplace, and Community Service

Under the catchy name, “Hear Us, See Us, Join Us,” this fundraiser cleverly combines art, community spirit, and a dash of retail therapy. With a mission inspired by none other than Dr. Vicky Ogunlade, this mission calls on everyone to not just see change but be the change. Reflecting on her journey, Ogunlade expressed the joy of being able to transform brand-new African wear into funds destined for the church’s enhancements. This vibrant marketplace is more than just a shopping destination; it’s an opportunity for community members to cherish and invest in their communal treasure.

Art That Tells a Story

Now, let’s talk about art! Breathe in the creative flair brought to life by Dr. Yvette Stephens. A physician-turned-folk artist whose artistic journey began during an unexpected bout with the early, mysterious symptoms of COVID-19. Her exhibit, titled “Rediscover, Remember, and Rejoice in Our History,” offers a window into the often-overlooked narratives of African American history. This showcase is not just about the past; it celebrates resilience and joy, using stories that deserve to be told and echoed across generations.

As if the visual beauty wasn’t enough, Dr. Stephens’s mother, Kathryn Smith-Stephens, adds a whole new layer of depth to this exhibit. Visitors can scan QR codes with their phones to experience the melodious strains of “Negro spirituals” sung by Kathryn — a music minister for five decades. It’s all about feeling the spirit, quite literally, through art and music!

More Than Just an Event

Adding a pinch of warmth and fragrance to the event are Dr. Catherine Meeks’ delightful scented candles. An artisanal endeavor that started twenty-five years ago, these candles, paired with personalized cards, are another way for attendees to contribute, making every purchase meaningful. Meeks sees candle-making as her artistic expression, sharing joy, creativity, and community love, one wick at a time.

A Call to Join and Participate

For those itching to partake, the event is wonderfully accessible, held within the church’s community service building. Indulge in an afternoon of exploration as you move between the lively marketplace and the serene Reflection Room adorned with Stephens’ exquisite artwork. The setup is crafted to charm, inform, and inspire every visitor by interwoven threads of art, history, and community service.

With close to $600 raised so far, it’s evident that every contribution counts in making the church a safe haven accessible to all. Running until December 14th, it’s an open invitation to experience the magic any Sunday from 1-4 PM, or catch it by appointment. The reverberations of this event resonate far beyond its physical walls — it’s about uplifting stories, community strength, and ensuring a space remains open and welcoming for all who seek solace and companionship within.

Don’t forget! The site awaits at 2407 Cascade Rd, SW Atlanta, GA 30311. Your participation is more than just a donation; it’s a commitment to community and continuity.
