ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Police in Columbus are investigating after a Meriwether County high school student was killed and another student was injured in a shooting late Saturday night, officials said Sunday.
According to the Columbus Police Department, officers responded to shots fired on Macon Road near Lake Shore Road in Columbus around 11:50 p.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, they discovered two vehicles with gunshot damage and individuals inside each car suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both victims were swiftly transported to Piedmont Hospital for medical treatment. Tragically, one of the victims, identified as Daryus Bryant, succumbed to his injuries at 12:53 a.m. Sunday. The other victim was immediately taken into surgery for further treatment.
In a statement on social media Sunday, the Meriwether County School System confirmed that Bryant was a student at Manchester High School. The district expressed deep sadness and concern over the incident, stating, “Our priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff.”
The school system also mentioned that counseling and support services will be made available at the school campus in the coming days and weeks. They described Bryant as “an exceptional young man who excelled both in athletics and academics.”
The district extended their condolences to the Bryant family and assured the community of their commitment to supporting one another during this challenging time. They also mentioned another injured student in the shooting, sending thoughts and prayers their way.
Authorities urge anyone with information regarding the shooting incident to come forward by calling 911 or contacting Cpl. Roy Green with Columbus Police at (706) 225-4261. Anonymous tips can also be provided by calling (706) 225-3161.
Police have mentioned that a reward may be given for information leading to an arrest in the case.
Notably, this is not the first time tragedy has struck the Meriwether County School District. Previously, another student from Manchester High School, Brandon Smith, a football player, was tragically murdered in December. A 19-year-old suspect has been charged in connection with his death.
The investigation into the recent shooting incident is still ongoing, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.
As the community mourns the loss of Daryus Bryant, support and resources are being mobilized to assist those affected by this devastating event. The Meriwether County School System and local authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff.
