In a move that is sure to bring some much-needed cheer to underserved neighborhoods, Atlanta is stepping up its game when it comes to fresh food access. The city’s Mayor, Andre Dickens, has declared a partnership with Invest Atlanta and Savi Provisions to establish not one, but two new grocery stores in areas that desperately need fresh food options. Yes, you heard it right! This initiative is all about fighting food deserts in the city and will be supported by more than $8.1 million in funding.
Food deserts are areas where residents struggle to access affordable and nutritious food, and Atlanta has recognized this significant challenge. The mayor, who also happens to be the Chair of the Invest Atlanta Board, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “We recognize the challenges faced by communities in accessing fresh and nutritious food,” Dickens stated. He believes that everyone, regardless of their financial circumstances, deserves access to healthy food. Now, that’s a sentiment we can all cheer for!
So, where will these grocery havens be set up? One will be located at 2080 Campbellton Road SW and the other right in the heart of downtown Atlanta. Both stores are designed to operate during convenient hours to cater to the busy lives of local residents. Shoppers can look forward to a wide selection of fresh produce, meats, dairy, and other essential grocery items—all at affordable prices.
This initiative isn’t just about providing fresh groceries; it’s also about creating jobs and stimulating the local economy. Dr. Eloisa Klementich, the President and CEO of Invest Atlanta, highlighted that these grocery stores are set to create around 80 new jobs, contributing to an estimated economic impact of a whopping $21 million. That’s significant news for the local economy!
These grocery stores will serve as community hubs, offering more than just groceries. Officials have announced that the markets will host cooking demonstrations, nutrition workshops, and resources aimed at improving families’ understanding of healthy eating habits. Who wouldn’t want to learn how to whip up delicious meals while shopping for fresh ingredients?
Making healthy food accessible is also a priority. Atlanta plans to accept payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps, among other discounts. This initiative is about ensuring that everyone can afford fresh food, a critical step towards creating a healthier community.
Paul Nair, the CEO of Savi Provisions, expressed his excitement about working with the city to bring these projects to life. “Savi is honored to work with the Mayor’s office and Invest Atlanta on these transformational projects,” he said. Nair addresses that traditional grocery chains haven’t prioritized these neighborhoods, impacting the health of residents. Savi Provisions aims to fill that gap and support the community.
Moreover, Atlanta is also looking to partner with local businesses and online grocery delivery services to provide additional support to residents. How convenient is that? Both grocery stores are projected to open their doors in the second half of 2025. So, while there’s a bit of a wait, the excitement is sure to build!
Atlanta is taking bold steps toward ensuring that everyone has access to fresh, nutritious food. With these new grocery stores on the horizon, residents can look forward to healthier options, job opportunities, and a vibrant community atmosphere.
