Atlanta Bracing for Chilly Mornings: Frost and Freeze Alerts Issued

Hey there, friends in the northern parts of Georgia! If you’re a fan of cozy sweaters and warm drinks, you’re in for a treat. There’s a chill setting over the North Georgia mountains, bringing with it some frosty warnings. An exciting mix of cold weather is on the horizon as we gear up for some really brisk mornings!

First things first, let’s talk about those Frost Advisory and Freeze Watch. It looks like from 1 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, the extreme North Georgia mountains could see temperatures dipping between 33 and 37 degrees. It’s the kind of cool breeze that makes you want to grab that extra thick blanket. On top of that, from late Wednesday night through Thursday morning, a Freeze Watch might bring temperatures down to a nippy 28 degrees!

Folks living in the mountains and foothills of the western Carolinas, and especially those in Habersham, Rabun, Towns, and White counties, should stay alert. Our top-notch weather doesn’t just sound the alarm for boot-and-scarf weather but also warns us of the potential impact on crops, gardens, and those pesky outdoor pipes. Nobody wants a frozen pipe surprise!

Take a Few Extra Steps: Protect and Prepare

So, what can we do? It’s about time to start giving some extra love to those tender plants – a quick cover-up to shield them from frost will do wonders. And don’t overlook your in-ground sprinkler systems; give them a good draining if you’re shelving them for fall. And while you’re at it, why not wrap up those outdoor pipes as a preventative measure?

This bracing air will spread, reaching all across North Georgia and potentially impacting areas along and north of Interstate 85 on Thursday and Friday mornings, bringing a bit of a crisp start to each day.

Breezy Gusts Adding to the Chill

As if the temperature drop wasn’t enough to grab a thicker coat, we’re looking at some breezy conditions too! Wind gusts might reach up to 20 mph, turning the cold air even colder. So, even if the thermometer shows something in the 40s for places like metro Atlanta, Blairsville, or Canton, it could feel even cooler due to that pesky wind chill factor.

Now, don’t let the cooler weather get you down. It’s a great reason for extra hot cocoa, gathering a bit closer around the fireplace, and breathing in some fresh, crisp air. And, if you’re a morning runner, it might be worth considering an extra layer or two to start your day.

The predicted high of around 68 degrees for the day might sound comfortable, but remember, it’s below the average, which usually sits comfortably in the mid-70s for this area. So, dig out those autumn clothing staples you’ve been waiting to wear, because you’ll need them!

So grab those jackets and scarves, and let’s enjoy this cooler snap while being wise about our plants and plumbing. Stay warm, North Georgia!
