This autumn, Atlanta has been buzzing with culinary delights, offering a delightful mix of flavors that keep food lovers coming back for more. From **sushi to barbecue** and impressive wine pairings, the city is proving it has what it takes to be a culinary destination.
First up, we ventured into the world of omakase at Brush Sushi, nestled in Buckhead. This place takes sushi to a whole new level by offering a private room experience that accommodates about ten people. There, the atmosphere is intimate, and the food is nothing short of magical. One dish that really stood out during my visit was a steamed egg topped with roe, served in an artistic bowl that resembled a cracked egg, cradled by a delicate porcelain hand. Talk about a feast for both the eyes and the palate!
The richness of the eggs combined with the salinity of the roe created a beautiful balance that paired perfectly with the sake served during our wine dinner, hosted by the one and only Richard Geoffroy, the founder and winemaker of IWA Sake. With a history at Dom Perignon for 28 years, he now crafts incredible sake that you can find at Michelin-starred restaurants worldwide. Having him in Atlanta was no small fry; it underscored the city’s mission to become a key player on the food scene.
On those chilly and rainy days of October, nothing quite hits the spot like Heirloom Market BBQ. With just a quick tap of the phone, I had a feast prepared for me, and let me tell you, their deals are beyond tempting! For $40, you can snag three meats and three sides that are rich in flavor. They claim it’s a portion for two, but trust me, it’s more than enough for four human beings!
The brisket, chicken, and spicy Korean pork were flavorful and tender, with the pork’s burnt ends truly shining through as a highlight. If you enjoy a leftover taco night, this is your call! The sides complemented the meat perfectly, especially the collard greens and kimchi. However, a bit of a disclaimer here: the mac and cheese may not hold up as well once reheated, so I’d recommend savoring that while it’s hot!
Next, we took a detour from traditional barbecue and explored Dhaba BBQ, Atlanta’s latest star that offers Indian-fusion barbecue delights! The pop-up operated by Jay Patel drew a crowd at the Green Beans coffee shop in Grant Park. I found myself in a line that snaked out the door, but trust me, it was worth the wait.
The pulled butter chicken sliders were creamy and rich, perfect for those who prefer milder flavors. On the other hand, the tandoori chicken sliders delivered a spicy punch that left my taste buds dancing! And don’t even get me started on the lemon-pepper wings; they’re seasoned with Indian spices that make them a must-have. A side of mayo-blend green chutney worked beautifully to balance the heat. Plus, fun fact: this culinary genius also has a day job in cyber security!
Rounding out my month of culinary adventures, I treated myself to a meal at the classic Aria in Buckhead. Here, the mountain trout with spinach, grapes, and almonds was exceptionally flaky and seasoned just right. The star of the evening had to be the bourbon-glazed salmon, paired with a 2008 François Chidaine sparkling chenin blanc that was a rare treasure. It’s these kinds of pairings that remind you why fine dining exists!
As the final touch, we indulged in some decadent desserts to close out the meal. The pound cake and cantaloupe panna cotta hit every sweet spot, especially with the accompanying pistachio shortbread cookie — I couldn’t resist dipping it into my dessert wine from Jorge Ordonez & Co.
With each test of taste in October, I’ve learned that Atlanta’s food scene is vibrant, thrilling, and packed with surprises. Whether you’re looking for traditional comforts or innovative new takes, Atlanta truly has something to tickle every food lover’s fancy. Here’s to more culinary adventures ahead!
