Atlanta Firefighters Take Strides to Fight Lung Disease in Charitable Climb

In a show of solidarity against lung disease, Atlanta firefighters and community members made their way to the top of the Promenade Tower in downtown Atlanta in a remarkable charity event termed the “Fight for Air” climb. Aimed at combating lung disease, the charity event was in its 18th year and was organized by the American Lung Association.

A Purposeful Climb

Participants, including numerous local firefighters adorned in their gear, took on the mammoth task of climbing the towering building, ascending nearly 40 floors or approximately 800 steps. Attracting more than 350 participants, the event was geared towards raising funds for the American Lung Association, a leading organization working to improve lung health and prevent lung disease.

Firefighters on the Frontline

Firefighters from multiple metro Atlanta departments stood at the front of the climbing pack, making their way up the tower with enthusiasm and determination. Gwinnett County Fire Chief Fred Cephas voiced his excitement about the charity event, highlighting the unique opportunity to compete and unite for a meaningful cause. “There’s nothing tragic going on. We just have an opportunity to compete and come together. That’s awesome,” he shared.

Brian Martin, a firefighter with over ten years of experience under his belt, conveyed a more personal investment in the event. He highlighted the career-related risks firefighters have for lung disease. “This isn’t just something that we’re doing for other people, but also ourselves, because as a firefighter, we are at risk for more lung diseases than other people because of what we breathe in during a structural firefight,” Martin said.

Preparation and Perseverance Show Distinct Results

The stair climb also tested the participant’s strength and stamina, illustrating the strain lung patients endure daily. Rachel Webster, chairperson of the American Lung Association’s Fight for Air Climb event noted that many had prepared assiduously for the climb. “People have been training. So, there are like people who went up there in like three or four minutes,” she revealed. “Your muscles really feel it. And then, of course, your lungs, like there was a lot of heavy breathing in the stairwell.”

Fostering Camaraderie and Community Spirit

Aside from the physical challenge involved, the event served as an excellent platform for camaraderie and community spirit. Firefighters and participants agreed that the success of the event was deeply rooted in their shared goal and combined efforts. Douglas Kerns, a firefighter from Dalton, articulated his joy at joining his fellow firefighters in the climb, emphasizing that their shared hardships solidified their bond. “We come together, and we see each other and I forget we got to climb because I’ve got friendship and brotherhood that’s here.”

Accomplishing the Climbing Milestone

The strenuous climb successfully raised over $130,000 for the American Lung Association, under the motto of the day; “Keep on climbing.” The participating firefighters have already made their mark on the community, proving their unwavering resolve while supporting a cause that directly impacts their line of duty. As they look forward to future climbs, they continue to build bonds and garner support against lung disease.

Reaping the Rewards of Community Engagement

Events like the “Fight for Air” climb relay a powerful message about the impact of collective effort in tackling health issues. As Atlanta firefighters continue stepping up to combat lung disease, they not only highlight their commitment to their communities but also directly aid the improvement of health conditions affecting countless individuals.
