This Labor Day weekend, Atlanta’s fashion scene was bustling with creativity and inclusivity as designers and models gathered for the second annual Fashion in the Garden. Held at the picturesque courtyard of the Darwin Hotel, this event was no ordinary fashion show. The event focused on promoting philanthropy and inclusivity within the fashion industry.
Transforming the garden into an eclectic runway, models flaunted unique designs that ranged from everyday wear to elegant evening gowns. The show even included timeless runway looks, providing a little something for everyone’s taste. The gathering was a showcase of the formidable talents of designers from various backgrounds.
The event highlighted several remarkable designers this year, including:
Each designer offered something unique, adding to the diverse and rich tapestry of the event.
The event was curated by Dr. Courtney A. Hammonds and Dr. Dionne L. Boyd, affectionately known as The Docs. According to Dr. Hammonds, inclusivity was a core focus this year. “It’s very siloed in a lot of spaces. Even in Atlanta, you gotta be the IT person to go. We didn’t want that stigma on this. We want anyone that can come from the janitor to the CEO because everybody’s important, and everybody wears a uniform,” explained Dr. Hammonds. By opening the event to the entire community, they aimed to create a more accessible and welcoming environment.
The event wasn’t just about fashion; it was also an opportunity for attendees to support local businesses and designers. The atmosphere was vibrant, with live entertainment ensuring guests had a night full of fun and dance.
Dr. Hammonds shared some insights on the future of the event, expressing optimism and ambition. “Greater and greater, is going to become even greater,” he said. The goal for The Docs is to create a teachable space that reflects a multitude of experiences. “We’re both loving people, and we’re teachers by trade, and so we want to remain teachable, and we want to give an environment of openness, inclusivity from any walks of life because fashion, music and food represent all those things. So, welcome…come to the table where it spreads,” concluded Dr. Hammonds.
The second annual Fashion in the Garden successfully achieved its key objectives, bridging gaps in the fashion community and fostering an environment of acceptance and creativity. While the night wrapped up with smiles and applause, it left everyone eagerly waiting for what next year’s show will bring.
