Atlanta Elementary School Students Gifted New Bikes for PE Class

Excitement fills the air at Humphries Elementary School

Students at an Atlanta elementary school are riding brand new bikes, all thanks to a new program that teaches kindergarteners how to ride a bike during PE class. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement at Humphries Elementary School on Monday as the kids awaited a surprise announcement.

Providing a Safe Opportunity to Learn Biking Skills

Principal Jaron Trimble expressed the challenges many of the students face in their communities, where limited greenspace and lack of bike lanes make biking unsafe. “The vast majority of our students stay in apartments and of course, there is not a lot of greenspace. There are definitely not bike lanes, so it becomes unsafe for our students to bike in their own neighborhoods,” Trimble said.

The surprise gift, consisting of 24 brand-new bikes and helmets, including one for the instructor, was a game-changer for the students. PE Teacher William Hannah highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, “They don’t have the privilege and opportunity to ride bikes now they will have that opportunity at school.”

A Program with a Mission

The “All Kids Bike: Learn-To-Ride Kindergarten PE Program” has now found its home at Humphries Elementary School. This nonprofit program aims to provide every child in America with the opportunity to learn how to ride a bike at a young age. The program was made possible through the generous donation from engineering firm HDR.

Congresswoman Nikema Williams emphasized the broader impact of the program beyond just providing bikes, stating, “Part of it is not even about the bikes. It shows students, children, that people care about them. That they are important and that we see them.”

Test Ride and Smiles All Around

Following the announcement, the students were able to take the bikes for a test run, and the joy on their faces spoke volumes about their excitement for the new program. PE Teacher William Hannah shared his enthusiasm, saying, “I think I am going to enjoy this just as much as the kids.”
