ATLANTA, GA — Excitement filled the air in Atlanta this week as local rapper, Dre “DreTL” Jones, clinched the coveted No. 1 spot on Netflix’s hit music competition show, “Rhythm+Flow.” After a thrilling ride through the second season, the final four episodes dropped on a Wednesday, and viewers couldn’t wait to see how it all shook out!
This season, the judging panel was star-studded with names that anyone in the hip-hop world would recognize — the amazing Latto, the legendary Ludacris, and the iconic DJ Khaled. Each judge brought their unique flair and expertise, making it tough to pick just one standout performer among the finalists: DreTL, Jasx, Jay Taj, and Sura Ali. But it was Jones who ultimately charmed the judges and earned himself the title!
To celebrate his big win, Georgia State University (GSU) threw a special watch party for DreTL. The atmosphere was electric, and special guests like DJ Holiday added to the excitement! Fans, friends, and fellow students gathered to cheer for their champion, making it a night to remember. They couldn’t have been more proud of DreTL, their fellow classmate who had just achieved the dream of many!
So, what set DreTL apart from the crowd? Well, according to Ludacris, it was “his heart.” In an interview, he explained that while many artists strive for perfection, it’s pivotal to embrace the journey of improvement. Ludacris likened DreTL’s growth to that of a “most improved” student, reminding everyone how important it is to be consistent and work on one’s craft daily.
DreTL’s music is deeply personal, often revolving around themes of “survival, ambition, and the fight to rise above.” An especially poignant aspect of his story involves his mother, currently incarcerated. In a moving moment during the final performance, he featured a call from her in his song, collaborating with renowned producer Hitmaka to bring his vision to life. That moment echoed not just his talent, but his incredible resilience.
But wait, there’s more! One of DreTL’s highlights was performing a rap battle in front of his idol, the one and only Eminem. They took the stage at Saint Andrews Hall in Detroit, which has its own legendary ties thanks to Eminem’s movie, “”,8 Mile.” Jones fought against K’Alley, another talented rapper, while every word was drenched in anticipation. As DreTL reflected on the experience, he confidently stated, “Once I was able to perform in front of him, I felt like I was going to win. Nothing was tougher than that.”
Despite rising to fame, DreTL faced challenges along the way. He shared that participating in the competition meant he was away from school, which complicated his academic journey. Luckily, the talented rapper is set to graduate this month from Georgia State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in music industry with a focus on music production and recording. Balancing both worlds is no small feat, but if anyone can do it, it’s certainly DreTL!
With his eyes on the future, fans can only imagine what’s next for this rising star. Whether he’s dropping new tracks or pursuing collaborations, it’s clear that DreTL is on the fast track to making waves in the music industry. Atlanta couldn’t be prouder of their homegrown talent!
Indeed, as we celebrate DreTL’s victory, it’s a reminder of the power of passion, hard work, and authenticity in reaching one’s dreams. Here’s to many more victories ahead!
