Atlanta Community Celebrates Leadership and Philanthropy at Wesley Woods Gala
Atlanta, buckle up, because we have some heartwarming news to share! On September 19, the Foundation of Wesley Woods put on a show-stopping event, the 35th annual Heroes, Saints and Legends Gala, hosted at the stunning Flourish venue in Buckhead. The evening was a delightful celebration of leadership, philanthropy, and community spirit, raising a jaw-dropping $520,000 for Wesley Woods senior living communities.
A Night to Remember
More than 300 guests attended this star-studded affair, honoring significant figures who’ve made lasting contributions to the Atlanta community. The 2024 honorees included Northside philanthropists Glenn and Susan Warren, known for their unwavering support for Wesley Woods and many other charitable causes in Atlanta, and Renee Lewis Glover, a leader in housing and urban development and the founder of the Catalyst Group. Previously the head of the Atlanta Housing Authority, Glover’s influence has been nothing short of transformative.
Emceeing the Event
The evening was skillfully guided by emcee and former honoree, Monica Pearson, who welcomed past honorees and made sure the night was filled with engaging, heartfelt moments. Guests were treated to a cocktail reception, followed by a sumptuous three-course dinner, and live entertainment that kept spirits high. A highlight of the evening was the awards presentation, where the achievements of the honorees were rightfully celebrated.
The Legacy Continues
Since its inception in 1989, the gala has honored 115 leaders, including revered figures like Rev Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, Gov. Nathan Deal, and J.B. Fuqua. Over the years, the event has managed to raise over $8.2 million for the Foundation of Wesley Woods. The proceeds directly support more than 1,800 older adults living in Wesley Woods residential communities across north Georgia, making a real difference in the lives of seniors.
A Gathering of Icons
This year’s honorees received a warm greeting from the foundation’s president, Diane Vaughan. The event also saw participation from past honorees, making it a Grand Reunion of sorts. Familiar faces like Phil Jacobs, the gala and board chair, and journalist Monica Pearson, who emceed the night, added to the evening’s spirited atmosphere. Others, including Reverend Dr. Ed Tomlinson, Reverend Dr. Bill Britt, and Reverend Dr. Phil Schroeder, added a dignified presence to the celebration.
Celebrating Together
It wasn’t just all work; the night also allowed for moments of joy and connection. Sherry and David Burruss, Bishop Robin Dease, Robert Gilles, and many others enjoyed their time at Flourish Buckhead. It was truly a night of celebration, camaraderie, and looking ahead to even more good that can be done for the community.
The Impact
The funds raised from this event will greatly benefit countless seniors residing in Wesley Woods communities. It’s more than just numbers; it’s about enhancing the quality of life, providing care, and fostering a loving community for those in their golden years.
The Heroes, Saints, and Legends Gala has again shown why it remains a cornerstone of community-centric events in Atlanta. Here’s to more years of honoring those who make a difference and supporting causes that touch our hearts. Atlanta, keep shining!
