The city of Atlanta is carving a new path in its fight against crime, following a fatal shooting incident earlier this month at a local club – Elleven 45 Lounge. New documents filed in the Superior Court of Georgia reveal that the city is seeking a temporary restraining order against the club, including its manager, property owner’s company, and others. The proposed order, if granted, would prohibit the club from holding events, serving patrons, or performing any operations.
It was on May 12 when the devastating occurrence transpired at Elleven 45 Lounge, a well-known Buckhead club situated in Atlanta city, ultimately leading to the tragic demise of two individuals. Nakyris Ridley, 20, and Mari Creighton, 21, were the unfortunate victims of the shooting incident.
Creighton’s older sister, Telia Wheeler, has been vocal about wanting the club to be permanently shut down, insisting that the establishment is far from safe. “It’s just not safe,” she iterated. “Had I known there had been prior such incidences, I probably would have encouraged my sister not to attend.”
Scrutiny of business records uncovers a tormented past for the lounge. Since June 2020, Atlanta police have been dispatched to Elleven 45 Lounge for two shooting incidents, not including the recent event, 35 fights, and 38 noise complaints. The club manager, Djibril Dafe, previously operated another infamous club – Encore Hookah Bar and Bistro. This establishment had been shut down by City officials two years ago due to raised safety concerns.
Meanwhile, an online petition intended to shut down the club that started in 2020 obtained an additional 600 signatures just this week, marking a significant milestone. “The surge in support signifies a near-unanimous concern among locals about safety and crime,” explains an unidentified community spokesperson. Djibril Dafe, the club’s manager, has yet to respond to related inquiries.
The owner of the embattled property, Lee Nicholson, in response to requests for a comment, merely uttered “no comment.” Meetings between the stakeholders are anticipated to take place in the coming weeks under judicial supervision.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Elleven 45 Lounge, its patrons, and the surrounding Atlanta community. As legal procedures continue to unfold and public opinion mounts, the city’s stance is expected to set a precedent for other establishments grappling with similar issues.
