Atlanta Honors Russell Family with Historic Four Pillars Tribute Celebrating Community Legacy

Atlanta Celebrates Legacy of Herman J. Russell Sr. at Historic Four Pillars Tribute

Atlanta was buzzing with excitement on October 10 as the city hosted a remarkable event honoring the family of the late Herman J. Russell Sr. This year marked a significant change in tradition for the Council for Quality Growth’s Four Pillars Tribute, as it was awarded to a family rather than an individual for the very first time in its 34-year history. The Russell family, known for their remarkable contributions to Atlanta’s growth and development, accepted the honor in front of a grand crowd of 1,500 guests gathered at the Georgia World Congress Center.

Celebrating Legacy and Community

The night was filled with heartfelt tributes and a focus on the lasting legacy of the Russell family, whose efforts have been instrumental in shaping the city we know today. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens kicked off the event by encapsulating the evening’s spirit with a powerful statement: “We are celebrating a family’s commitment to community.” He further emphasized that the Russells exhibited “pure grit” and were truly “built to last.”

Accepting the prestigious award were Herman Russell Sr.’s sons, Jerome Russell and Michael Russell Sr., while their sister, Donata Russell Ross, made an appearance via video from out of town. As speakers took turns at the podium, stories of how the Russell family’s influence has permeated Atlanta’s history over the past eight decades resonated throughout the crowd.

Building the Foundations of Atlanta

A major highlight of the night was the acknowledgment of how Herman J. Russell Sr. played a pivotal role in establishing numerous iconic buildings in Atlanta, including the headquarters for Delta Air Lines. Tad Hutcheson, the airline’s vice president of community engagement, proudly claimed, “Every building at Delta was built by the Russell family.”

U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock, whose ties to the community are strengthened by his role as the senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church, shared a touching personal story, saying, “I’m literally standing in the sanctuary that Herman Russell built.”

A Commitment to the Next Generation

Another voice at the event was Jay Bailey, CEO of the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs (RICE), which now occupies the former headquarters of the family’s construction company. Bailey’s presence highlighted the ongoing commitment to prepare the next generation of Black entrepreneurs, further championed by the Russell family’s ongoing dedication to community service.

Jerome Russell expressed profound gratitude upon receiving the honor, declaring the Four Pillars award “one of the highest honors H.J. Russell had ever received.” He also emphasized the importance of “the Atlanta Way”—a term that reflects his father’s legacy of bridging divides across racial lines.

The Russell Family and Their Legacy

In an exclusive interview prior to the gala, Jerome and Michael reflected on the values instilled by their father and the aspirations they hold for their family’s future. “When I think of my father, I think he would be proud,” stated Michael Russell, now 59. “We have built upon the foundation he built.” Jerome, celebrating his 62nd birthday, affirmed that their father’s legacy was “inspirational,” focusing on a “spiritual and magical” realization of continuing the family’s mission.

Herman Russell Sr.’s influence extends to four generations—the Russells refer to themselves as G-2, their children as G-3, and the youngest members, the grandchildren, as G-4. The family continues to grow with a commitment to honoring Herman’s vision.

Reflections on Change and Future Aspirations

As the brothers discussed progress and challenges, they acknowledged how the landscape of Atlanta has evolved since their father’s time. “Back then, creating Black and white partnerships was central to Atlanta’s evolution,” Michael shared. He noted that while these partnerships still exist, they often feel more “transactional” compared to the meaningful collaborations of previous decades.

Finally, as both brothers dive into their respective roles within the family enterprise, they expressed excitement about the journey ahead. “Every day is precious,” Jerome reflected. Meanwhile, Michael is keen on taking H.J. Russell & Co. to new heights while remaining active in the community. They are determined to keep the spirit alive that Herman J. Russell Sr. embodied, leading with purpose and a vision for future generations.

Conclusion

The Four Pillars Tribute not only honored the legacy of a remarkable family but also reignited a spirit of collaboration and community within Atlanta. As the Russell family continues to pave the way for others, they inspire a city to dream bigger and build a brighter future.
