Atlanta Crime Spree: Man Caught Trying to Steal Rental Cars at Airport
ATLANTA — In yet another bizarre chapter of car theft at one of the busiest airports in the world, police have arrested a man accused of swiping rental cars from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. This latest incident happened on a chilly Monday night when an eagle-eyed officer on patrol received a call about a suspicious individual lurking around the airport’s rental car center.
Sneaky Moves Caught on Camera
The officer arrived to find 27-year-old Jaquavious Crenshaw attempting to open the door of a parked car. When asked for his name and identification, Crenshaw gave a first name but conveniently claimed he didn’t have any ID on him. When pressed about what he was doing, he replied, “I’m just trying to ask someone a question.” Yet, things quickly took a turn when the officer showed him a surveillance photo that had been previously captured.
“Uh, yes that’s me,” Crenshaw acknowledged, probably not realizing that acknowledgment would land him right in hot water. The photo was connected to the theft of a Kia Forte and a Kia Sorento that had been reported stolen just the night before from the same location!
Close Call with Security
Thanks to a security barrier, Crenshaw’s plans to make off with an Audi A6 were thwarted. With another quick move, officers arrested Crenshaw on the spot. The situation only escalated from there; it turns out this wasn’t his first go-round with the law. Investigators were quick to discover that he had previously faced charges for car thefts, including an incident at the airport rental car center in 2022.
A Rise in Car Theft
Crenshaw is now facing a slew of charges: theft by taking (automobile), theft by taking (key fob), prowling, and entering an automobile. What a list! In a time when holiday travel is ramping up, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the increased risks associated with airport car rentals.
It’s important to note that the situation at Hartsfield-Jackson isn’t an isolated phenomenon. Atlanta police recently released data indicating that car thefts at the airport have more than tripled over the past year. From January 1, 2023, through December 31, 2023, a staggering 95 car thefts were reported. However, just this year, that number has skyrocketed to at least 311 car thefts! This is certainly alarming news, particularly for those planning to travel during the bustling holiday season.
Protective Measures in Response
To combat this worrying trend, local police officials have announced that they’re ramping up patrols at the airport as travel picks up pace. Travelers can expect to see an increased police presence, aimed at deterring would-be car thieves and ensuring everyone has a safe and stress-free experience while navigating the airport.
For anyone renting a car at the airport, it’s wise to stay vigilant. Make sure to lock up and keep your belongings secure. With the holidays approaching, the last thing anyone wants is to have their festive plans disrupted by the unsavory antics of individuals like Crenshaw.
So remember, staying alert not only protects your own belongings but also helps in keeping the community safe. Travel safe, Atlanta!
