Atlanta, we’re buzzing with excitement as the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce prepares to lead a business mission to the vibrant country of Colombia from November 16-22! It’s been over a decade since a trip like this has taken place, and it’s all about creating valuable connections between our local businesses and Colombian opportunities.
With a market of around 50 million people and a long-standing free trade agreement with the United States, Colombia is rapidly becoming a hotspot for Atlanta companies. Chamber CEO Veronica Maldonado-Torres emphasizes the importance of rekindling these international business missions, stating, “We have members and folks that want to open up operations in Latin America.” The chamber’s goal is to connect local businesses with the right resources and partnerships.
The upcoming mission has an exciting itinerary that will take participants to two key cities: Bogotá, the capital, and Medellín, known as the country’s commercial heart. Attendees will have the chance to meet with Colombian business leaders and government officials while immersing themselves in the country’s rich culture. It’s not just a work trip; it’s an opportunity to experience Colombia’s vibrant lifestyle, delicious cuisine, and friendly people!
At a recent event highlighting Colombia’s potential, Consul General Adriana Arias Castiblanco shared the country’s remarkable transformation into a key destination for manufacturers and tech companies. Colombia has come a long way, and the ties between the U.S. and Colombia span over 200 years. In recent times, discussions between Colombian President Gustavo Petro and President Biden indicate a growing partnership that is fostering economic growth and stability.
Colombia is presenting itself as a multifaceted powerhouse, with a strong emphasis on manufacturing, agriculture, and technology. Hernando Galindo from ProColombia painted an enticing picture of what Colombia has to offer. “Anyone manufacturing in Colombia has access to that 1.5 billion people,” he stated, referring to the country’s extensive network of trade agreements that enable access to markets across the globe.
And it’s not just talk; Atlanta companies are already discovering the advantages of establishing operations in Colombia. For instance, YKK recently opened a new factory near Medellín, and Spectrum International has set up a fulfillment center there. Even small businesses, like RickyJoy, are exploring sourcing opportunities, showing that Colombia is open for business.
Another notable player in the Colombian market is UPS, which has been expanding its footprint in the country. Their shared services center in Medellín has grown significantly, from 200 to 1,000 employees, proving that the city is a hub for talent and service exportation. “Why Medellín? The ability to get multilingual people in the workforce,” explained Alvaro Moscoso Diaz from UPS.
Not only is Atlanta’s business community embracing Colombia, but cultural connections are also on the rise. Last year, a historic trade mission brought 20 Black-owned businesses to Cali, enhancing ties with the Afro-Colombian community. There’s a growing recognition of shared experiences and opportunities, particularly as both cities work towards building stronger minority business networks.
With the upcoming mission and continued collaboration, the relationship between Atlanta and Colombia is set to flourish. The possibilities are endless, and now is the perfect time for businesses in Atlanta to explore the vast potential that Colombia has to offer. Whether you’re looking to establish trade, source products, or connect with innovative minds, Colombia is embracing Atlanta with open arms.
As the dates approach, the excitement builds. We can’t wait to see how this mission brings our two communities closer together, fostering economic growth and cultural exchange. Here’s to new beginnings and bright opportunities ahead!
