A fire erupted in an abandoned building in Atlanta, injuring two firefighters on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred near DeKalb and Glendale avenues. Fire crews quickly doused the flames, while investigations into the fire’s cause are ongoing. Concerns in the community are heightened due to the recent pattern of fires in vacant structures, as multiple agencies now collaborate on the matter to ensure safety and answer lingering questions.
Atlanta is the latest city to witness the dangers of abandoned buildings as a fire broke out in a vacant structure, leaving two firefighters injured. The blaze erupted on a Friday afternoon and was reported around 1:42 p.m. near the intersection of DeKalb and Glendale avenues.
Responding swiftly, fire crews rushed to the scene and tackled the inferno, quickly extinguishing the bulk of the flames. After battling the main fire, firefighters combated persistent hotspots lingering within the building. Despite the intensity of the situation, the two injured firefighters received evaluations on-site and chose not to be transported to a hospital. Their current condition remains under wraps.
Investigators are now in search of answers regarding what ignited the fire. At this time, authorities have not disclosed whether anyone was inside the abandoned building during the incident, but fortunately, no other injuries have been reported.
This is not the first fire involving an abandoned structure in the region. Just a few days prior, a significant fire consumed another vacant building on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW, closing an exit on I-20 East. Fire officials confirmed that building was also unoccupied, and no injuries arose from that incident.
Another abandoned site on Cheshire Bridge Road caught fire recently, resulting in no reported injuries, intensifying concerns about the safety of these structures. Adding a tragic note to the recent spate of fires, an abandoned church on Cameron M. Alexander Boulevard became the scene of a grim discovery. Fire crews, faced with severe flames and a partial roof collapse, found two bodies inside the church after bringing the fire under control. While one victim was identified as male, the other remains unspecified.
With multiple incidents rattling the community, several agencies, including the ATF and the state fire marshal’s office, are now involved in probing these fires. Residents have expressed concerns, noting that many abandoned buildings are often utilized as makeshift shelters by unhoused individuals, further complicating these urgent situations.
As Atlanta continues to deal with the risks presented by abandoned structures, the community remains vigilant, hoping for answers and safety in the future.
