Atlanta BeltLine, a comprehensive transportation and economic development project, is making significant progress as they continue to work on several design and construction efforts in March 2024. From improved parks and trails, exciting new trails, and community-strengthening initiatives, there is much to look forward to for residents and visitors of Atlanta.
The Northeast Trail – Segment 1 construction is on its way, working through three phases. With Phase I already complete, it features running lights, cameras, and a trail running adjacent to the Clear Creek up to Evelyn Street. Construction grading and wall work are ongoing for Phase II while preparation for Phase III work is in progress with the project management team coordinating with neighborhood groups and APS for phase details and timing.
The Ponce de Leon Avenue Streetscape project is making significant strides, showing great promise for enhancing pedestrian and bicycle connection along Ponce de Leon Avenue to the BeltLine. With the bulk of sidewalk construction between Ponce City Market and Ford Factory Lofts nearing completion, work on the Beltline access ramp will commence once GDOT approves wall and material submittals.
For the Southside Trail – Segments 2 – 3, construction bids were received earlier, with work expected to commence by late spring 2024. Major improvements should be noticeable by 2026. The Segments 4 – 5 are also showing progress, particularly with the ongoing storm line installation.
Significant progress is achieved in Westside Trail – Segment 4, with construction going on for retaining walls and granite cladding installation in process along the corridor. The first two elevated sections of the trail near Washington Park are completed and significant grading is being carried out between Washington Park and Washington Manor.
The new access point to the Westside Trail, the Ralph David Abernathy Access Point at Westview, is seeing significant construction progress. The project aims to provide a ramp and stair connection to the BeltLine along with a landscaped plaza. Concurrently, streetscape improvements in the heart of the West View business district are also underway.
The Northwest Trail projects are proceeding with various stages of progress across different segments. Segment 1 is set to begin construction work soon at the Peachtree Park Apartment complex, whereas construction in segment 3 is scheduled to commence in April.
Plans for an eight-acre park on Atlanta’s west side, Enota Park, are ongoing. The project awaits confirmation of budget and final adjustments on design before construction begins. Construction schedule is currently pending on permits and real estate resolution.
To further improve Atlanta’s transportation, a major transit study focuses on determining the ideal transit alignment in the NW BeltLine quadrant where there is no abandoned railroad corridor. The study will identify stop locations and general cross-sections in the SW and SE quadrants of the BeltLine corridor. The process is being led with a focus on equity and aspiring to create a world-class network of high-capacity transit in a green guideway.
With projects progressing on time and an ongoing commitment to improving the city’s infrastructure, the BeltLine project continues to be pivotal in enhancing the quality of life for Atlanta’s residents. The Atlanta BeltLine remains a shining example of how a city can develop while keeping sustainability, community, and inclusiveness at its heart.
