Under bright skies and with spirits high, about 200 students from the wider Atlanta metropolitan area devoted their Saturday to tidying up parts of the much-loved Atlanta BeltLine. The clean-up forms part of the preparations to celebrate Atlanta Day, commonly known as 404 Day, in a salute to the city’s telephone area code.
For the uninitiated, 404 Day, earmarked for 4th April each year, is commemorated by locals to exhibit their appreciation for everything quintessentially “Atlanta”. A series of events encapsulate this day, involving residents from all walks of life in the city. A vital part of these annual celebrations is the day of service scheduled for 30th March, which sees several local universities join hands with the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership.
The student participation comes from nine prominent universities from within the city. Each university targets its clean-up efforts on specific locales along the sprawling BeltLine. These include:
Emory University and Morris Brown College: Fourth Ward Skate Park
Georgia State University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College: BeltLine Partnership Headquarters
Clark Atlanta University and Oglethorpe University: Bobby Jones Golf Course
Atlanta Metropolitan State College and Georgia Tech: Pittsburgh Yards
Emphasizing on the significance of their collective efforts and the potential impact, Kevin Cone, Georgia Tech’s Assistant Athletic Director and member of the organizing committee, commented, “We believe in the power of collective action and the positive impact we can make when working together.”
The Atlanta BeltLine Partnership’s executive director, Rob Brawner, expressed gratitude for the combined efforts extended by the universities and the volunteers participating in the day of service. Aligning with the vision of a more connected and inclusive Atlanta, Brawner said, “We appreciate the dedication of our university partners and volunteers who are proud of this city we love.”
With a vast expanse to cover, the 200 student volunteers diligently cleared out trash and unwanted litter along different parts of the BeltLine.
Showing up early on the sunny Saturday morning, the students, brimming with enthusiasm and camaraderie, did a commendable job of beautifying Atlanta’s celebrated urban walking, cycling, and public transit trail.
As the city of Atlanta gears up to celebrate 404 Day with aplomb, the day of service is a significant reminder of the importance of community efforts and civic mindfulness in maintaining the charm and livability of the city. With the dedication of these young volunteers, one can hope that the events of 404 Day create greater community cohesion and promote a collective sense of responsibility towards the Atlanta BeltLine, a cherished jewel in the heart of Atlanta.
