The 22-mile loop, a pivotal part of the city’s identity, is now about 85 percent complete or under construction, with a dazzling 2030 finish line in sight. As of December 2024, there are 626 units planned for next year, including a unique affordable housing project on Chappell Road. The conversation around adding light rail along the Beltline path has been buzzing since the initial announcement of the Streetcar East Extension project. This would connect downtown’s streetcar system to Ponce City Market. Although there’s been some wavering from Mayor Andre Dickens on supporting this mega project, the Beltline’s principal engineer, Shaun Green, argues that rail is the glue that holds the entire loop together. “The vision of the Beltline transit system is really one of democratization,” Hill explained. He believes that rail makes the trail accessible for all—regardless of wealth or ability.
