Atlanta, a city known for its vibrant art culture and rich history, has recently been buzzing with excitement. Atlanta Art Week is in full swing, opening doors to poignant discussions on identity and culture. At the heart of these conversations is Alfred Conteh’s solo show, “Acceptance: Identity & Circumstance”, which has made quite an impression on everyone lucky enough to visit the exhibition.
Housed in a charismatic space that opened on Friday, October 4, 2024, Conteh’s showcase is all about exploring the layers of Black identity amid Southern backdrops. Whether you are a regular art aficionado, or someone just beginning to dive into the art world, the bold strokes and powerful themes presented in Conteh’s work offer something for everyone.
Born in Fort Valley, Georgia, and now an Atlanta resident, Conteh’s artistic journey is vivid and deeply rooted in personal and collective experiences. His pieces, known for capturing scenes from everyday urban life, make viewers question how much they really see and understand about their surroundings.
The meticulous curation by Courtney Brooks ensures that each piece showcased proffers questions and encourages deep reflection. “I want people to think about where they are, their place—not just in Atlanta, but in society as a whole, especially when it comes to us as African Americans,” says Conteh. The works urge viewers to step outside their comfort zones and consider perspectives different from their own.
While Conteh calls Atlanta home, his influence echoes in far-flung places like Peoria, Illinois. Assisted by community enthusiast Everley Davis, he has connected with diverse groups of people during his visits to the city. His eagerness to capture their experiences shines through in big pieces like “El”, showing intimate portraits of fathers and sons who narrate their legacy through silent, intense visual stories.
Davis recalls the impact Conteh’s work had on Peoria’s community, noting how one of his previous pieces immediately garnered attention and love. This attachment led to Peoria Riverfront Museum’s initiative to commission a short documentary that showcases the depth and reach of Conteh’s work.
As technological advancements dominate daily life, Conteh feels compelled to reflect on their impact, especially on the younger generation. His piece titled “Influence” explores how digital media shapes and sometimes confines these identities. Standing face-to-face with this art, viewers can see the ubiquitous image of a young individual absorbed in their phone — a scene all too familiar.
Though Conteh presents a critical view of this digital era, he acknowledges the possibilities it unfolds. He articulates, “Influence is an image we all see every day—someone staring into their phone. Now, everything is in the palm of your hand, which makes the world smaller, but also less social,” the piece intents to spark conversation about the nature of identity formation today.
The exhibition, which continues until October 6th, will close with a special film screening that will further delve into these themes of identity and acceptance amidst contemporary challenges. As a culmination of creative and intellectual exploration, this exhibition during Atlanta Art Week is a must-see.
The stories told within Conteh’s exhibition challenge us as a society to embrace nuanced perspectives and explore beyond the surface. As Atlanta Art Week progresses, witnesses of Conteh’s work are left pondering the same questions of identity and acceptance that his art poses, opening eyes to new vantage points, and generating dialogue that can amplify understanding and empathy.
