In the vibrant city of Atlanta, creativity flows through the streets, stemming from a rich heritage of music and art that resonates deeply with its residents. Among them is Brandon Ball, a talented DJ and educator who has carved a niche for himself by merging his passions into an exceptional initiative known as ARTiculate ATL.
Brandon’s journey into the world of music and art began in his childhood home on the south side of Atlanta. He fondly recalls Saturdays spent cleaning the house while spinning records from his parents’ impressive collection. It was during these moments that he developed a deep appreciation for music, fueled by the beats and rhythms of legendary DJs, especially his idol, DJ Jazzy Jeff. “The way he can blend and go through any genre of music is impeccable,” Brandon shared with a smile.
In 2013, Brandon, also known as Ball Tec when he’s behind the turntables, took a significant step that would combine all his passions. Teaming up with his friend and business partner, Courtney Ware Lett, they launched ARTiculate ATL—a project that celebrates visual artists in Atlanta through a series of engaging art shows and energetic parties.
Just like many young dreamers, Brandon’s path wasn’t without its twists. He once juggled various corporate jobs that left him feeling unfulfilled. “It wasn’t ‘fulfilling,’ and I wanted to do something that I was truly passionate about,” he explained, reflecting on his career before ARTiculate ATL. He and Courtney initially hosted parties, making it a point to cultivate an atmosphere resembling a cozy house gathering rather than a crowded nightclub.
In a serendipitous moment during a paint and sip event, he met George Galbreath, a high school teacher. Intrigued by their conversation, he proposed working together to bring his vision to life. With that partnership, the ARTiculate ATL concept blossomed, transforming from an idea into an immersive experience that showcases Atlanta’s artistic talent.
Brandon understands that art can sometimes be viewed as intimidating or pretentious, so he made it his mission to ensure ARTiculate ATL is a welcoming space for all. “We wanted to make it feel like a house party,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in the art community. Each event is structured to educate attendees about the art business while connecting them with talented visual artists.
Education plays a massive role in Brandon’s life, stemming from his family’s strong ties to the education sector. With his mother, uncle, and aunt all dedicating their careers to teaching, it was a natural progression for him to become an adjunct professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art. There, he teaches a course on “Management and Leadership,” aimed at nurturing creativity among photographers and designers.
“It’s almost like an MBA for creatives,” he explained, showcasing his commitment to bridging the gap between art and practical business skills. He also emphasizes cultural relevance in his courses, teaching students how culture influences the products and services we create.
As someone who has navigated his way through various life’s challenges to achieve his dreams, Brandon has valuable advice for aspiring creatives. “One of the things I would recommend is to try to design the life you want,” he shared. His mantra encourages individuals to believe in their dreams, even when others may not.
With ARTiculate ATL, Brandon Ball is not just promoting art but is also cultivating a community where creativity thrives and connections flourish. His story is a true testament to the power of passion and the impact one person can have on their community. So next time you’re in Atlanta, be sure to check out an ARTiculate ATL event—you might just find inspiration in the air!
