In a heartwarming development for the local Zambian community and bilateral relations, Atlanta has just appointed its very first honorary consul for Zambia! The new volunteer diplomat, Dr. Anna Ndashe Katema Banda, is making waves not just as a medical professional but also as an advocate for empowering women and children in her native country.
Dr. Katema Banda is a familiar face in metro Atlanta, particularly in the Zambian community. Currently working as a neurohospitalist at Piedmont Hospital in Fayetteville, she’s been a dedicated member of her diaspora, tirelessly doing her part to uplift her homeland. One of her notable endeavors is founding the Atlanta Zambian Women With Influence, a nonprofit geared toward educating orphaned girls and boosting the lives of women in Zambia—a country of 21 million people.
In Dr. Katema’s own words, her role as honorary consul is a privilege. “I am honored to be appointed as the first honorary consul for Zambia in Atlanta and to contribute to strengthening the ties between our two regions,” she shared with Global Atlanta. Her commitment to fostering collaboration spans various fields, from trade and education to cultural exchange, and she aims to elevate Zambia’s presence in southern Africa’s business landscape.
This exciting appointment comes on the heels of a visit from Chibamba Kanyama, Zambia’s ambassador to the United States. The ambassador was in town to headline a Books for Africa fundraiser, demonstrating Zambia’s growing diplomatic footprint in Georgia. Local organizations like Zambians Promoting Leadership in America have warmly welcomed Dr. Katema, emphasizing that her appointment symbolizes a significant leap in Zambia’s outreach and partnership-building efforts.
Freda Mwamba Brazle, founder of Zambians Promoting Leadership in America, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to see the potential for collaboration grow under her guidance.” The ZLA even honored Dr. Katema with a community leadership award for her unwavering dedication to the cause.
Georgia now holds the distinction of being home to the honorary consul for Zambia, marking the 12th African country to have diplomatic representation in the state. Though Nigeria hosts the only African career consulate, 11 other nations, including Zambia, are utilizing honorary consuls to advance their interests. Big names like South Africa and Kenya are still contemplating their own honorary consuls, but for now, the spotlight is on Zambia.
Nico Wijnberg, Georgia’s chef of protocol, notes, “Our strategic location, global connectivity, and robust international community offer a springboard for companies, creating opportunities for Georgia through trade and investment.” The inclusion of Zambia in this vibrant mix is indeed an exciting development! Wijnberg also described Zambia as a growing economic power in southern Africa.
Originally hailing from Lusaka, Zambia’s capital, Dr. Katema Banda has come a long way. She began her medical career as a certified nursing assistant in Indianapolis and made her way through the Virginia College of Medicine before specializing in vascular neurology at Emory University. A firm believer in the value of education, she says, “To whom much is given, much is also required.” Her mission to foster educational opportunities for the underprivileged is a shining example of this ethos in action.
As Atlanta embraces its new honorary consul from Zambia, it’s clear that Dr. Katema Banda’s appointment heralds a promising chapter in enhancing diplomatic relations and cultural ties between Georgia and Africa. With her at the helm, we can expect exciting developments that will enrich both communities.
