Atlanta, GA — A heartbreaking incident involving a Metro Atlanta airman came to light last week. The active-duty airman, a former Atlanta resident, was found dead near Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas. The 24-year-old officer was reported dead after an apparent collision with a train near the Air Force base.
The airman has been identified as Second Lt. James Chitika, who had been stationed at the Texas Air Force base. Laughlin is one of the many U.S. Air Force bases located in Texas and primarily serves as a training facility for pilot candidates.
According to the reports, Lt. Chitika had been walking along the railway tracks when he was struck by an oncoming train. Val Verde County authorities discovered his body around 9 a.m. on Tuesday near an off-base railway and immediately notified the Air Force officials.
The base released a statement expressing their profound sadness. “We tragically lost a member of our Air Force and Laughlin family,” said Col. Kevin A. Davidson, 47th Flying Training Wing commander. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and all those who knew him. Our top priority now is to support the bereaved family and those struggling with the loss.”
The death is currently under investigation by the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office. At this time, no further information about the circumstances leading to the tragedy has been released. But it is expected that more detailed information will be available in the upcoming days, following the completion of the investigation and autopsy report.
In times of loss and grief, it becomes crucial to give families space and respect as they mourn the loss of their loved ones. The Air Force base has reinforced this sentiment and asked everyone to respect the privacy of Lt. Chitika’s bereaved family members during this challenging time.
The unfortunate passing of Lt. Chitika under such tragic circumstances shook not only his family and fellow service members but the entire Atlanta community. As we await further information, we take this time to remember the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women in the military. Our thoughts and sympathies remain with Lt. Chitika’s family and friends during this difficult time.
