ATHENS, Ga. – In a shocking turn of events, a local tax preparer is in hot water after being caught red-handed in a massive fraud scheme. Jessica Crawford, a 33-year-old owner of Crawford Tax Services, has pleaded guilty to filing over $3 million in fraudulent tax returns. She could be looking at a hefty sentence of up to 30 years in federal prison when she faces the judge for sentencing on March 19, 2025.

Into the Deep End of Fraud

During a court appearance on November 22, Crawford didn’t hold back and admitted to charges of wire fraud and aiding in the preparation of false tax returns. This isn’t just a minor mishap; it’s a full-blown case of fraud that has raised eyebrows all around Athens and beyond.

Demetrius Hardeman, the Special Agent in Charge of the IRS Criminal Investigation’s Atlanta Field Office, didn’t mince his words. “Jessica Crawford was an unscrupulous return preparer who allowed greed to cloud her judgment,” he said. His message is clear: folks need to pick their tax preparers wisely because, at the end of the day, you are still responsible for the accuracy of your own tax returns.

A Pandemic Pickpocket

The fraudulent activities came to light during the troubled times of the COVID-19 pandemic, when many were seeking assistance to get back on their feet. Investigators revealed that Crawford had taken advantage of the system by filing for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits on behalf of clients. These clients were not exactly above board; they created fake businesses and fabricated information to receive benefits that were meant to help the vulnerable during the crisis. And you guessed it, Crawford didn’t let the opportunity slide—she pocketed a portion of these illegal payouts.

Undercover Operation Unveils Deceit

Things took a serious turn in April 2022 when IRS agents staged an undercover operation at Crawford’s office. An agent posing as a client had a tax return prepared by Crawford, where she essentially fabricated a fictitious landscaping business with barely any information. This little charade resulted in a fraudulent tax refund of $12,359!

But that was just the tip of the iceberg. A thorough review by the IRS quickly flagged more red flags. They found that out of 1,261 tax returns Crawford prepared between 2020 and 2021, there were massive fraudulent claims that racked up to over $3 million. These included falsified claims for sick leave, family leave credits, and dependent care credits, among other tax benefits.

The Long Arm of the Law

Both the FBI and IRS Criminal Investigation teams were involved in this case, emphasizing how seriously they take these kinds of fraudulent schemes. As Sean Burke, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Atlanta office states, “Crawford lied and took advantage of funds designed to help those in need during the pandemic. The FBI and our partners will continue to hold fraudsters accountable.”

In addition to the prison time that looms, Crawford could also face a $1 million fine and a possible five years of supervised release once she completes her sentence.
