Atlanta Public Schools holds final meet and greet before vote on superintendent candidate

ATLANTA, Ga. (HERE NEWS) – Atlanta Public Schools held its final meet-and-greet with their superintendent finalist before voting him into office on Friday night at Booker T. Washington High School.

“Not only did people come out but they came out with enthusiasm and energy and excitement,” said Aretta Baldon, the school board representative for district 2.

The meeting was a packed house despite being the day after a holiday.

“The board is focused on the right work, the community is engaged at a really deep level, and so I’m excited about the possibility of what we could do for these children,” said superintendent finalist Dr. Bryan Johnson.

Parents and teachers were able to ask Dr. Johnson about his vision for the district.

“We’ll have a 100 day plan where we’ll really have a chance to share what we’re reviewing and what we’re listening to and what we’re learning and gathering,” said Dr. Johnson.

They were also able to address what they believe needs to be worked on in the district.

“There’s a big push for college readiness. Not all students want to go to go to college. Also: retention,” said Dara Tekalu, who is the mother of an APS student and a teacher in the district.

“Special education has probably come up in every conversation. The desire for engagement,” said Dr. Johnson.

The school board is set to vote on Dr. Johnson’s contract Monday, July 8 at 10 a.m.
