Atlanta is gearing up for an exciting event—the African Film Festival Atlanta (AFFATL). Powered by the African Film & Arts Foundation inc., this year’s festival marks its 4th edition, taking place from March 13 to 17, 2025.
This year’s theme, African Voices, Global Stage: The Nollywood Influence, promises an engaging platform that celebrates the rich narratives and cinematic artistry coming from Africa, especially the thriving Nollywood scene. Atlanta serves as a dynamic backdrop, well-known for its cultural, artistic, and film production attributes.
The festival’s mission is clear: to showcase the passions, subtleties, and trends of African cinema. A thrilling line-up of world-class films from both African and global filmmakers will be on display. Viewers can look forward to compelling stories brought to life by critically acclaimed performers, exceptional directors, and talented cinematographers.
This year, attendees can immerse themselves in thought-provoking documentaries alongside feature films. Notable titles include “Mojisola” by Kenneth Gyang, “The Man Died,” and “Ebrohimie Road: A Museum of Memory.” The documentary segment features films such as “Le cinéma de Marie-Josèphe,” “Price of Hope,” and “Ichi: Marks in Time.” Detailed information on the full selection of films is available online.
Beyond film screenings, AFFATL will offer a range of engaging activities, including interactive workshops, discussions, masterclasses, and networking sessions. A highlight of the festival will be the Nigerian themed cocktail reception known as Jollof “N” Chill, which will bring together Nollywood personalities, YouTube creators, and influencers.
AFFATL aims to transform the global perception of the African continent through film. Their goal is to spark meaningful conversations about Africa’s narrative while providing actionable insights that push the dialogue forward. The festival has forged a partnership with the Nollywood Travel Film Festival to enhance the showcasing of African cinema, storytelling, and culture.
The festival director, Ms. Mojisola Sonoiki, brings over 20 years of experience in film festivals and cultural events, ensuring a well-organized and impactful festival. The AFFATL will take place across two venues over five exciting days.
Screenings on March 13 and 14 will be hosted at the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture & History, with free admission. On March 15, 16, and 17, the Cinefest Film Theatre at Georgia State University will offer screenings with tickets priced between $15 to $20. Tickets are available for purchase online.
With a diverse array of films and interactive experiences, AFFATL promises an unforgettable journey for both filmmakers and audiences alike. Don’t miss out on the chance to witness the vibrant world of African cinema unfold right in Atlanta!
