Atlanta Mourns the Loss of Steve Mensch, a Regal Presence in Film Industry
ATLANTA — The bustling city of Atlanta is in mourning after the tragic news of the passing of Steve Mensch, the President and General Manager of Studio Operations at Tyler Perry Studios. The beloved figure in the local film community was taken from us far too soon, with the studio confirming his death in a heartfelt statement on Saturday.
In their candid tribute, the studio expressed, “We are incredibly saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Steve Mensch. Steve was a cherished member of our team for more than eight years, and well-beloved in the community of Atlanta. It is hard to imagine not seeing him smiling throughout the halls. We will miss him dearly. Our heart goes out to his family, as well as sending them our prayers.”
A Community Rocks in Grief
Steve’s unexpected passing has hit hard, drawing not only the love of his colleagues but also the respect of many in the film industry. On that fateful night, reports from the Federal Aviation Administration indicated that a single-engine Vans RV-12 plane registered to Mensch was involved in a crash in Homasassa, Florida. The incident took place around 8 p.m. on Friday, and sadly, the pilot — Steve himself — was pronounced dead at the scene.
The National Transportation Safety Board has stepped in to investigate further details surrounding this devastating crash. The aviation community is buzzing with concerns and condolences, as the shocking news spreads.
Remembering a Friend and Mentor
Atlanta’s Mayor, Andre Dickens, paid tribute to Mensch, recalling him as “a trusted friend and supporter of the Mayor’s Office of Film and Entertainment.” Dickens remarked on Mensch’s willingness to inspire others, always opening the doors for students and interns to cherish the art of cinema. “My thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues at Tyler Perry Studios,” Dickens added solemnly.
Mensch’s journey into the film industry began with his work at Feature Systems, where he played an essential role in supplying equipment for the burgeoning movie scene. Later, he took his talents to Atlanta-based Turner Broadcasting, running studio operations and championing initiatives to elevate film production in Georgia.
A Legacy of Advocacy and Friendship
Lee Thomas, the Director of the Georgia Film Office, expressed profound sorrow over Mensch’s demise, stating, “More than his impressive resume – he was a great friend.” He highlighted Mensch’s invaluable contributions that helped transform Georgia into a cinema powerhouse through his push for film tax credits and leadership roles in key organizations.
Reflecting on their long-standing relationship in the film industry, Thomas noted, “Steve was already a fixture in the film industry when I started at the Georgia Film Office 28 years ago.” He recognized Mensch’s influence in growing studios across Georgia, specifically highlighting his leadership at Third Rail Studios and eventually at Tyler Perry Studios when he joined the studio in 2016.
A Tragic Coincidence
Adding a poignant layer to this tragedy, Steve Mensch passed away on the same day that Tyler Perry debuted his latest film, “The Six Triple Eight,” a powerful war drama based on an all-Black, all-female battalion in World War II, shot at his studio.
Steve Mensch is remembered not only for his professional accomplishments, but also for his infectious warmth, humor, and willingness to lend a helping hand. He leaves behind a loving family, including his wife and three children, and countless friends who will certainly miss his radiant presence.
As Atlanta grieves this tremendous loss, the community stands united in prayers and thoughts for the Mensch family. Indeed, Atlanta has lost not just a brilliant mind in film, but a genuine soul who touched the hearts of many.
