Busy Weekend Ahead for Atlanta Drivers as Roadwork Projects Ramp Up
Hey there, Atlanta! If you’re planning on hitting the roads this weekend, you might want to buckle up for some delays. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced a flurry of construction projects across metro Atlanta that will keep road crews busy and could impact many drivers. So, let’s dive into what to expect on the streets!
Interstate 285 Construction Zone
First up on our list is Interstate 285, specifically the stretch between Ashford Dunwoody Road and Henderson Mill Road/Lavista Road in DeKalb County. Construction is in full swing as crews work on a resurfacing project that started a while ago and is set to wrap up by late fall 2024. Starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, July 26 until 6 a.m. on Monday, traffic will be reduced as the two right lanes are closed. Both the entrance and exit ramps at Chamblee Tucker Road will also undergo closures. As work progresses and time allows, expect further closures at the Chamblee Dunwoody entrance ramp. GDOT has promised to have signs in place to keep drivers informed, but be prepared for delays and consider alternative routes.
Interstate 20 Undergoes Lane Changes
If you’re cruising on Interstate 20 just west of Atlanta, you’ll want to keep an eye out for lane closures due to milling and paving activities. Starting at the same time as I-285, 9 p.m. on Friday, until early Monday morning, expect alternating double left or right lane closures extending 25 miles from the Douglas County line to the I-20/I-285 intersection in Fulton County. Just like before, signs will alert drivers to the changes ahead.

Further Construction on I-285
Not to be outdone, another ongoing safety project is taking place on I-285 between Riverdale Road and I-75 in Clayton County. From 9 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Monday, be ready for rolling lane closures here too. It’s part of a $318,000 safety and maintenance project aiming for completion by late summer 2024.
Resurfacing on West Atlanta Street
Heads up! There will also be single lane closures on State Route 5/West Atlanta Street this weekend from 6 p.m. on Friday until 6 a.m. Sunday. This is part of a $1.1 million resurfacing project aiming for completion in fall 2024. Expect alternating lane closures as crews work their magic.
Busy Nights on I-75 with Restriping
If that’s not enough roadwork for you, there’s more! Nightly lane closures will occur on I-75 in both Fulton and Cobb counties as crews apply high-reflective striping, enhancing driver visibility in wet weather. This will also start on Friday and continue each weekend night until 5 a.m. the following mornings.
Upcoming I-85 Closures Next Week
Lastly, if you plan to drive on I-85 next week, be prepared for daytime and overnight closures from Monday, July 29 to Friday, August 2. Daytime work will close one lane from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., while overnight closures will happen from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.. This means some planning ahead is in order!
Remember, GDOT has made it clear that drivers can monitor traffic delays and closures at 511ga.org, so make use of that resource! With all this construction in the works, it’s the perfect excuse to pack your patience as you navigate the roads this weekend. Stay safe and happy driving, Atlanta!
