Exciting News for Palm Springs: A New AIDS Memorial That Speaks from the Heart

The City Council of Palm Springs has just given the green light for a fantastic project that shines a light on love, remembrance, and community unity—the installation of an AIDS memorial called “Well of Love”!
A Symbol of Love in the Desert
During a recent council meeting, the decision was made to boost the city’s financial support for this beautiful memorial from $65,000 to $125,000. Designed by the talented artist Philip K. Smith III, this memorial has a total budget of $1.2 million. It’s going to be located right in the heart of Downtown Park, making it an ideal spot for gathering and reflection.
Smith, while presenting to the council, expressed his thoughts eloquently: “The new Palm Springs AIDS Memorial is a well of love in the desert. It is a gathering place for love in much the same way that Palm Springs was a gathering place for those with HIV/AIDS early in the pandemic.” With powerful messages like “Forever Remembered,” “Forever Loved,” and “Forever Celebrated,” this memorial promises to be a true testament to those we cherish.
A Community-Driven Approach
It’s fascinating to know that the initial design for the project didn’t quite resonate with everyone. However, thanks to a series of five listening sessions and a town hall, community members had their voices heard and helped shape the plan into something that everyone supports. Smith noted, “What came out of the listening sessions, as well as the town hall, is a desire from the community for this to be an actual space.” And now, it is much more than just a sculpture; it’s become a cherished Palm Springs AIDS Memorial.
A Beautiful Design That Invites Reflection
The memorial is going to be constructed with 1½-inch thick cast glass, featuring a mirrored surface on the backside that will create a unique reflective effect. The layout includes two precast benches to offer a comfy spot for visitors to sit and reflect, which is an idea that came directly from community feedback.
