Atlanta's Craft Beer Scene Welcomes Women, Breaking Barriers and Redefining Inclusivity

Atlanta’s Craft Beer Scene: A Refreshing Transformation

Atlanta, a city known for its vibrant culture and warm hospitality, is brewing up something exciting in the craft beer scene! A wave of dynamic women in the local industry is shaking things up and making craft beverages a warm and welcoming space for everyone. Think you can’t enjoy craft beer because it’s all about the “beer bros”? Think again! Here’s a closer look at how these women are breaking down barriers and pouring out delicious beer for all.

Women at the Helm

Believe it or not, women were the original brewers of beer in ancient cultures! The first brewers in places like Egypt and Mesopotamia, and even women known as alewives in England, once held the keys to this cherished craft. However, fast forward to the American craft beer movement, and it’s been primarily a scene dominated by White men. Thankfully, Atlanta is now seeing women reclaim their rightful place at the table— and it’s about time!

Meet Caroline King: Breaking the Mold

Caroline King is one of the trailblazers leading this charge. Initially moving to Atlanta from New Orleans in 2016, Caroline found herself enamored with the city’s booming brewery scene. But she was annoyed with the intimidating vibe she found in beer shops and podcasts, usually hosted by “bearded white dudes.” So, what did she do? She launched her own podcast, Bitch Beer, in 2017, which aimed to make learning about craft beer fun and accessible.

“I wanted to change the narrative,” Caroline says. “I want people to walk into a brewery feeling confident.” With her unique blend of humor and knowledge, she’s been showcasing the voices of women and minorities in the industry. Her podcast is soon transitioning into a TV show, thanks to a grant focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This exciting venture will spotlight diverse figures in craft beer as she travels around the country, proving that craft beer is for everyone!

LaTreace Harris: The Beery Godmother

Another powerhouse making waves is LaTreace Harris, better known as the Beery Godmother. It all began for LaTreace 20 years ago when she was often left out of the beer-loving scene at parties dominated by the guys. Feeling unsatisfied with the usual beer options and determined to join in, she embarked on a self-taught journey to learn everything she could about beer.

Fast forward to 2023, she’s a certified Cicerone and runs a consultancy that transforms how beer is served and understood in restaurants and taprooms. “Education is key,” she explains. “It’s not about knowing everything; it’s about igniting a passion in others.” LaTreace’s work emphasizes that beer appreciation can come from anyone, with a sprinkle of love and knowledge!

Jen Blair: The Master Cicerone

Last but certainly not least, there’s Jen Blair. As one of only 28 Master Cicerones in the world and one of just five women in that select group, she’s breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes in the beer judging world. However, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for her. “Beer judging can be very closed off,” Jen admits, sharing her experiences where she faced exclusion as the only woman in the room.

Committed to fostering a more inclusive environment, Jen launched online courses aimed at aspiring female and non-binary Cicerones, which attracted over 700 sign-ups! “People want to dive deeper into this world. This is more than just beer; it’s community,” says Jen, emphasizing that that diversity enriches the entire beer culture.

The Future is Bright!

Atlanta’s craft beer scene is definitely boiling over with energy and excitement, thanks to women like Caroline, LaTreace, and Jen. Their passion and dedication are reshaping the industry and creating an environment that invites all people to explore the fantastic world of craft beer.

So whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or a newcomer curious to try a pour, know that Atlanta’s breweries are embracing diversity. There’s absolutely no room for gatekeeping in this exhilarating craft beer revolution—everyone is welcome to join the party!
